What's On?

Week 4 | Term 2 | 11 May 2026 | Mullumbimby High School Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Community members, I hope this message finds you well.

Transition to High School

I’d like to begin by extending a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in the recent Year 6-7 transition afternoon. Our future Year 7 students had a fantastic experience, and the positive feedback from our Partner Primary Schools was wonderful to hear. Thanks to Jackson Meaney’s incredible work, we are building a strong Year 7 group for 2027. Having 140 extra young people onsite does make it quite hectic in the bus lines and we will be working on this before Year 6’s next visit.

Parent-Teacher Evening

Our Parent Teacher Evening was a terrific success with an excellent turnout and many meaningful interactions between teachers and parents. It was described by one teacher as a “bit of a lovefest,” which truly reflects the supportive spirit of our community. If you missed the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to reach out by phone.

Girls Futsal win!

Congratulations are also in order to our Under 14s Girls Futsal Team for their outstanding wins at the South East Queensland Futsal Championships. Your efforts make us all proud!

Congratulations to these young ladies!
Looking Ahead

Our school is actively preparing for its external validation process, which assesses our achievements and sets the path for future growth. This important review highlights the invaluable work of our staff, students and community partners, and provides a chance for reflection and renewal of our School Excellence Plan.

Connect and Thrive

Student voice and agency remain central to our work. The ‘Connect and Thrive’ event last term gave our students a powerful platform to share their views. We are responding by encouraging further student participation in shaping positive change within our school community. If your child is interested in being part of this exciting next phase, please encourage them to get involved, all students have been emailed the details of how to get involved. High Achievers Class

We also continue to support a rich range of programs for our high potential and gifted students through the High Achievers Class and related initiatives such as Accelerated Maths, Sports Excellence, debating, and more. This year we will be refining selection processes for our High Achievers class and rebranding it to be called an extension class. This will help us to identify and nurture a broader diversity of talent, ensuring more students can achieve their potential. The selection process will focus on the intellectual and social emotional domains of high potential. Expressions of interest will be welcomed from Year 6 students for the 2027 cohort at the end of this week and closing at the end of term.

School Uniforms

A reminder as it gets cooler that blue Mullumbimby High School hoodies and jumpers are our school uniform, for all students Year 7-11. Year 12 have their commemorative jersey that they are able to wear. Please, no more black jumpers or hoodies, especially ones emblazoned with logos.

Keeping Kids Safe Online

Parents and carers can access a series of webinars and resources on how to ensure online safety for your young people through the e-safety commissioner. Upcoming webinars about how "AI is influencing new online risks" and "The trust trap" https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/cybermarvel/parents

Thank you for your ongoing support, and for partnering with us to provide the best possible educational experiences for our students.

Have a fantastic Week 4. Ms Bree Harvey-Bice, PRINCIPAL

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

If you have ever wondered where our core values of respect, responsibility and learning come from, it is from the Positive Behaviour for Learning program. This year a staff team are revitalising PBL to better support our students and to maintain our high expectations of all. Each week, we will have a focus on a different behaviour. Last week, we saw the positive outcome of these reminders though the excellent behaviour of students at our ANZAC assembly. The Week 3 focus is on being on time to class. “In class, on time, ready to learn.” As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership. It means everything to our students to know they are seen, known, and valued — by their teachers here at school and that what they do here at school is valued by you at home.

Sports News

The school will host Monaro High School on Thursday 28 May for an afternoon of interschool sport. Students will have the opportunity to compete in Futsal, Rugby League, Basketball and Netball. Please note that the school Athletics Carnival, originally scheduled for Friday 29 May, has been rescheduled to Wednesday 3 June to accommodate this event.

Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages

GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY?  If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE?  School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.

A Note from our P&C

We’re delighted to share that the P&C and Mullumbimby High School have agreed to co-fund a number of long-awaited Faculty Wishlist items, supporting learning across a range of areas:

  • CAPA (Drama): Sony FX30 Cinema Camera Pro Kit
  • TAS: Twin drum sander
  • TAS: Sawgrass Virtuoso sublimation printer
  • HSIE: Archaeology dig kits
  • Science: 5 × Airlink Bluetooth sensor connectors
  • Wh

Decision to fund these items was made at the P&C’s most recent meeting last Monday. There was strong agreement in the room that this is exactly what our fundraising should enable – practical, high-value resources that will be used and appreciated by students for years to come. It’s a fantastic outcome, and a great example of what can be achieved when the P&C and school staff work closely together. With these contributions, the P&C’s financial support to MHS now exceeds $17,000 over the past 12 months. We’d like to sincerely thank everyone who makes this possible – our dedicated volunteers who organise events, write grants and lend a hand wherever needed, as well as our wider school and local business community for their ongoing generosity and support. This collective effort, built over many years, is what allows the P&C to contribute meaningfully to the school. Looking ahead, this year’s P&C Trivia Night Fundraiser is shaping up to be another great evening – please save the date: Friday, 21 August.
