On Feb. 27, staff and families from the Douglass and Herff Elementary communities gathered at the Carver Community Cultural Center for a "Heart Healthy Night," the first family event for the merging schools. Teachers and coaches brought fresh produce grown in the schools' gardens, jump ropes, and hands-on CPR kits from the American Heart Association.

Staff from both Herff and Douglass brought samples of the produce that both of the schools grow in their school gardens. Herff second grade teacher Soila Hernandez proudly showed off a cabbage from the Herff garden, which is partially funded by local non-profits Gardopia Gardens and Big Green. These two non-profit organizations invested $250,000 in SAISD schools to boost school garden initiatives at schools like Douglass and Herff.

Chanel Hoskins, physical education teacher and coach at Herff, welcomes families to the jump rope portion of the event. Participants were challenged to use a provided jump rope to get jumping to elevate their heart rate.

This event was one of a number of Blending the Familia events that Herff and Douglass will be facilitating and participating in over the next few months. Douglass will be closing its doors as part of the District's rightsizing process, and students and staff have the opportunity to make Herff their home school.
