Historic Neighborhood Energized by The James River and Forest Hill Park
Forest Hill is a vibrant community where you will find outdoor adventure, architectural diversity, popular restaurants, and a passion for the arts.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS
Forest Hill Park
Annexed by the City of Richmond in 1933, Forest Hill Park offers 105 acres of outdoor enjoyment wrapped around a secluded lake. Walkers and bikers have access to 3.2 miles of trails through the wooded, hilly terrain. Other recreational options include tennis courts, six pickleball courts, a playground, and one of the most popular sledding hills in the area.
James River Park System (42nd Street Entrance)
Outdoor enthusiasts have easy access to the James River Park System via the 42nd Street entrance. You will find a ramp for putting in kayaks and canoes, a gravel trail that connects to Belle Isle, and wildlife viewing opportunities along the Buttermilk Trail. The parking lot has space for 30 cars.
Buttermilk Trail
Popular with runners and bikers alike, the Buttermilk Trail extends 2.6 miles along the south bank of the James River. Rocks, roots, and sharp turns make this trail an invigorating challenge. With easy access via the 42nd Street entrance, the Buttermilk connects with the North Bank Trail to create a 6-mile loop.
“Music In The Park” Concert Series
Each year the Forest Hill Neighborhood Association sponsors “Music In The Park,” a series of open air concerts held in Forest Hill Park. Beginning on Mother’s Day, the monthly concerts feature a broad range of family-friendly performances. Admission is free, and dancing is irresistible!
43rd Street Festival of the Arts
For over 30 years this September festival has attracted artists, musicians, and thousands of attendees from Richmond and beyond. Browse the work of 70+ local and regional artists, knowing that a portion of all sales goes to support CARITAS, a nonprofit providing services for people experiencing homelessness or addiction.
South of the James Farmers Market
The South of the James Market is an open-air producer-only market where farmers and artisans sell locally-grown and hand-made items. It’s run by GrowRVA which promotes sustainability and healthy food options for all Richmonders. Open every Sunday between 10 AM and 1 PM, the market is held in Forest Hill Park (42nd Street entrance).
