THE BARDS
OUR STORIES ARE OUR LEGACY
Program Overview
THE BARDS is a creative storytelling and legacy preservation program developed by The Film House that empowers elders to document, preserve, and share their life stories with dignity and intention. Rooted in conversation, memory mapping, and guided documentation, THE BARDS positions elders as authors of their own history and keepers of cultural memory. The program is designed to honor lived experience, strengthen identity, and ensure that personal and family histories are not lost—but carried forward in the elder’s own voice.
Who It Serves
- Elders in senior centers, assisted living communities, and aging services programs
- Individuals and families seeking to preserve personal and generational history
- Communities invested in cultural continuity and legacy preservation
What Participants Do
Over a 10-week residency, participants engage in structured yet intimate storytelling sessions that include:
- Memory Mapping Through Conversation – guided dialogue that surfaces pivotal life moments, values, and experiences
- Oral History Capture – facilitated recording sessions using professional microphones and accessible tools
- Narrative Reflection – organizing stories into themes, timelines, and legacy markers
- Digital Legacy Creation – preservation of stories as short-form recordings or cinematic artifacts
Each session is designed to be accessible, flexible, and affirming—prioritizing dignity, emotional safety, and creative ownership.
The Experience
THE BARDS creates a warm, studio-style environment that blends tradition with modern documentation practices. Technology is used sparingly and intentionally to support storytelling—not overshadow it. Participants are not taught to perform; they are invited to remember, speak, and be heard.
Impact
- Preservation of personal and family histories
- Increased confidence and sense of purpose among elders
- Reduced isolation through meaningful engagement
- Strengthened connection between memory, identity, and legacy
Select programs culminate in a private family or public community showcase, honoring elders as storytellers and cultural historians.
Why THE BARDS Matters
Stories disappear every day. THE BARDS ensures elders are not remembered secondhand—but heard directly, on their own terms, in their own voice. This is not nostalgia. This is authorship.
