Behind the Brush Fall 2025 Showcasing illustrators and their work from the Fall 2025 semester.

Unpublished Illustrations

This Fall semester, between working on illustrations for our articles, social media content and visual stories, our illustrators have put their blood, sweat and tears into each piece. However, given the nature of working in a newsroom, not all pieces made it to the website. Here's a look at those illustrations.

Social media Content

This semester, our illustration team expanded its role by providing illustrations for The State Press socials team. This allowed us to bring exclusive illustration content for our Instagram audience. Below are some holiday-themed illustrations that have not been shown on the State Press website until now.

"For this piece, I really wanted to emphasize the feeling of community and closeness from Thanksgiving, and I'm happy with how it turned out! I tried to give it a more personal feeling with the composition and color palette, and I like how it looks kind of like a shot taken out of a "friendsgiving" cooking party. Overall, I really enjoyed making this piece and I'm glad to have contributed something fun for the holidays!" - Jennifer Kao.

"I wanted this illustration to give off the feeling of excitement when work or school is ending and the holidays have begun! The office has festive decorations, packing boxes can be seen in the corner, and the employees are dressed up and celebrating. I also wanted to include nods to The State Press, so I added The State Press logo to the computer screen, and a newspaper shelf on the side of the desk. I attempted to use less linework than I usually do, relying instead on blocks of color and some colored lines. Overall, I'm really happy with how this piece turned out!" - Caitlin Hawkinson.

Illustration Stories

This semester, our team took on some art challenges known as Inktober and Huevember, in which they made an illustration for every day of October and November. Now we'd like to give you a little more information on those stories with insights from the Multimedia Director Matthew and Visuals Editor Caitlin

"Back in September, I was talking to one of the former Multimedia Directors and she introduced me to Inktober. It felt like such a good fit for our many talented illustrators and really did a lot to bring the desk together. Other than Behind the Brush stories, I haven't really seen large-scale illustration stories like this since joining The State Press, which made this feel like a big step for this department. Between projects like Inktober and Huevember, I feel this group of artists has really done their best to leave their mark on The State Press." - Matthew Marengo.

"When editing the Huevember story, I wanted to ensure that every illustrator was properly credited and that all their favorite pieces were highlighted. I also felt it was important that the illustrations were laid out in the correct order. This way, the reader can scroll through them and see all the illustrations together as a gradient of color. I created the header image by combining an illustration by Jennifer Kao with the 30 color palettes used throughout the project." - Caitlin Hawkinson.
