Although social media has given people a gateway to scenic outdoorsy areas, it's not the same as actually being there. It's given them false contentment that actually removes us from what's genuinely there. Being outside is much better than consuming digital content of nature because it gives long lasting and exponential amounts of satisfaction.
In an article by UCDavis Health, they explain the several factors that going out in nature does to your health.
1. Nature can help improve our thinking, reasoning, and other mental abilities. In nature, our bodies are much more relaxed that office and urban environments. This lack of pressure helps us concentrate and focus effectively.
2. Nature can improve physical wellness. Studies show that taking hikes and walks reduces cortisol levels, muscle tension. It also lowers our resting heart rate through its physical demand on the cardiovascular systems.
3. It can improve our mental health. Nature has been scientifically proven to lessen stress and decrease feelings of anger. It also leads to a more regular sleep schedule, allowing you to sleep better.
In a blog written by The Outdoor Specialists, they bring up a few tips to effectively use your phone in the outdoors.
- Remember your phone isn't a substitute for your brain. Phone's are very useful! They can help us explore and see what's out there beyond familiarity. And while that can be a good thing, it's important to not rely on your phone for important things like survival and navigation knowledge. There may be an instant where you lose connection or your phone breaks/dies and you'd wish you had a map and compass on hand.
2. If you don't have a camera, a phone's a great alternative. Just try to remember that there's more to see and experience from your own eyes. Also if your phone is used consistently for photography, make sure to bring an extra battery pack just in case.
3. Use your phone's battery sparingly, especially if going on a big hike. Your phone should be utilized for texting/calling people if needed and really not much else. Especially in colder weather your phone's battery will be reduced significantly.
