Millard West Academic Excellence

AP Culture

Advanced Placement (AP) is the most widely accepted college-level academic program available to high school students. It will ultimately enhance a student's ability to succeed in challenging college coursework. Students who plan on attending a college or university should seek to take at least one AP course in a strength area. Millard West has a variety of different classes such as AP Macroeconomics, AP Computer Science, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Music Theory, AP Chemistry, and many others. Weighted grade points will apply to AP Courses.

AP CAPSTONE PROGRAM

AP Capstone is a diploma path that allows students to develop skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. The program builds on the content knowledge that students have learned throughout their education thus far. This path allows students to gain experiences that prepare them for college and career success.

AP CAPSTONE REQUIREMENTS

Year 1 - Junior Year

AP Seminar Course

AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Students learn to investigate a problem or issue, analyze arguments, compare different perspectives, synthesize information from multiple sources, and work alone and in a group to communicate their ideas.

Year 2 - Senior Year

AP Research Course

AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.

Throughout High School

4 AP Classes - Score 3 or higher on exam

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing receive the AP Capstone Diploma™.

Millard West has seen tremendous success in the first years of the program and anticipate rapid growth of the program in the coming years.
