Riverside Currents

Week 4 Term 2 2026

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Caregivers, I hope you have had a wonderful week. New School Sign I hope you’ve all had a chance to see our new school sign, whether as you’ve driven past or via our Instagram. I hope you agree with me that it looks stylish, professional and contemporary and hopefully represents the sharpness and quality of the people and activities that take place within the gates. Thankyou to the P&C for funding the sign, with us eagerly awaiting delivery of many more for different locations around the school; all with the purpose of smartening up the physical surrounds for our students, as well as serving practical, wayfinding purposes. In the meantime, the new Victoria Road sign makes a very big statement and will hopefully gain lots of attention in the high visibility, high traffic location. I am so proud of our school and believe that it deserves the attention that this sign should bring.

Round table with the Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University It was my great pleasure, as a Partner School Principal, to be invited to participate in a high school principal round table with the Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University and the University Executive, yesterday to discuss issues being faced by the tertiary sector and the anticipated impact on future students. We shared our thoughts and ideas on changes to the tertiary sector, AI, post-school transition and ways to support students, and entry pathways to Macquarie University. It is always inspiring to visit a university campus and to connect with tertiary colleagues. I always appreciate the opportunity to contribute my thoughts and ideas, from our school context, to be considered by the university as they continue to seek to improve the transition and experience for future students, many of whom will come from Riverside. In the meantime, we continue to encourage and support our students in considering the various pathways open to them in seeking university entry. Peter Pan The cast of Peter Pan hosted a bake sale on Wednesday to raise money for the school production. It is always so wonderful to see the girls work together with such creativity and commitment to create a theme through their baked goods. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Young and the cast for bringing us such a colourful and tasty array of baked goods. Special thanks also, to Narelle and Joyce in the Front Office for baking such amazing scones and star shaped shortbread biscuits. I particularly appreciated the date scones! Cross Country As a result of the gloomy weather forecast, we made the call early this week that we would make the cross country carnival competitors only. Hopefully, next year we can return to normal school business and have the whole school involved and participating. Despite the variation to routine, it was a wonderfully successful day with our competitors impressing us all with their determination and talent in navigating the tricky, slightly sludgy course. Dance Studio It is with great excitement that I share the news of the progress of our Dance Studio. A few days ago I did a walk through with a team of architects, engineers, quantity surveyor and other trades. It seems that it is all systems go in the design and construction of this wonderful, well-earned specialist space for our dancers and associated performers and teachers. As far as I am concerned, it is long overdue for our dancers, considering the breadth of talent and dedication, not to mention success and kudos, that they bring to our school, both in the classroom, on the stage and beyond. Year 10 Subject Selection Evening – Tuesday 26 May 6:00pm If you are a parent of a Year 10 student, please put this date in your diary to attend the Subject Selection Information Evening. Students should also attend as we will present them with their Subject Selection Booklets and all of the information they require to make well informed decisions. Year 7 2027 Ignite (HPGE) Test Registrations

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Louise McNeil Principal

NSW Public Schools Survey

In Term 2, on Thursday 21 May, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.

Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours. Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which has been emailed home, and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss. Ms N Miller

Year 7 Cyberbully Workshop

On Monday, Year 7 participated in an engaging cybersafety and anti-bullying program delivered by PT Starr’s Productions alongside their Year Adviser Ms Hendriks. The program focused on educating students about cyberbullying, online safety and strategies to support themselves and others. Students began the day by watching an interactive performance that explored respectful online behaviour and the impact of cyberbullying. We were delighted when an audience member was invited up to the stage to be involved in the performance! Year 7 then participated in a presentation that deepened their understanding of bullying, conflict and meanness, followed by collaborative role play activities where some enthusiastic groups presented their scenarios on stage to their peers. Furthermore, we concluded with a celebration of student achievement, recognising students who had earned five commendations across subjects, attendance and school service. Overall, Monday was a fantastic opportunity for Year 7 to build important knowledge and skills while celebrating positive contributions to the school community.

Year 7 Camp - A Memorable Adventure!

Last term, our Year 7 students headed to the Collaroy Centre for an exciting 2-night, 3-day camp experience. The girls did an incredible job immersing themselves in every activity, showing enthusiasm, resilience, and a willingness to give everything a go. Throughout the camp, students built strong connections within their day groups, getting to know their peers better and forming new friendships. It was fantastic to see so many step outside their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and support one another along the way. Even the infamous cabin group dynamics were navigated with positivity, with only a few small hurdles along the journey. Some of the most memorable moments came from the wide range of exciting activities including laser tag, archery, the giant swing, flying fox, high ropes, drop pole, abseiling and the list goes on! We even survived the storm that rolled in during dinner on Thursday night, bringing with it a VERY dramatic light show over the coast, which added another unexpected adventure to the night! Overall, camp was a fun and rewarding experience for all involved. A huge thank you goes to our dedicated staff who supported Year 7 throughout the trip and generously gave up time with their own families to attend. Ms Aldred, Ms Eldridge, Mr Palmero, Ms Thompson, Ms Chilcott, Ms Thompson and Ms Wong, your commitment made this experience possible - truly a dream team! Ms T Hendriks

Peter Pan Update

We are delighted to share the success of our Pirate Bake Sale that took place on Wednesday. Thanks to the generosity and support of our students, families, and staff, the event raised $988 to support this year’s play. A wonderful variety of homemade and store-brought treats were donated and enthusiastically purchased throughout the day, creating a fantastic community atmosphere amongst both staff and students.

We sincerely thank everyone who baked, volunteered, and contributed to making the fundraiser such a great success. We especially appreciate the support of our wonderful SASS staff for making delicious scones with jam and cream to sell to the staff at Recess 2. This was a wonderful addition to the success of our bake sale. Due to our fundraising efforts and the generous support of our P&C, we have been able to keep ticket prices to our production of Peter Pan at $15 (plus booking fee). We encourage everyone to purchase tickets to the school production, as a full and enthusiastic audience helps create an exciting atmosphere that makes the performance even more enjoyable for our talented cast and crew. Performances will take place at 6:30pm on Wednesday 3, Thursday 4 and Friday 5 June. There are still some great seats available for the Wednesday and Thursday night performances, and all tickets must be purchased in advance, as no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are available through Trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1581235?date=2026- 06-04 This week we began costume fittings with the professional costumes we have hired from Gosford Musical Society Costumes. We have been hiring our costumes from them since 2019 and we are grateful for the high quality costumes that help to bring our production to life on stage. Thank you to the P&C for funding the costumes of our school production. Here is a sneak peak of some of the costumes.

Beach Volleyball Schools Cup Tournament

Riverside students recently showcased outstanding skill, teamwork and determination at the Beach Volleyball Schools Cup Tournaments held at the Blacktown Beach City Courts. Year 8 and 9 students competed on Monday, followed by Year 10 students on Wednesday, with a total of five Riverside teams representing the school across the two days.

Beach volleyball presents an exciting challenge for students, as the game differs greatly from indoor volleyball. Players are required to demonstrate all-round skills rather than specialising in one position, while also adapting to the physical demands of playing in the sand and the added challenge of rainy weather.

Riverside achieved incredible success across the tournament, proudly bringing home gold medals for one Year 8 team and one Year 10 team, as well as a silver medal for the Year 9 team. Beyond the impressive results, all students displayed excellent sportsmanship, resilience and teamwork throughout the event.

We are extremely proud of every player who represented Riverside and especially proud to have been the only public school competing in the tournament. Congratulations to all students involved on an outstanding achievement!

We wish our Year 11 & 12 teams luck as they compete next Wednesday! Stay tuned!

Year 11 Hospitality Work Placement

Year 11 Hospitality students participated in a week-long work placement across a range of well-known venues, including Deckhouse, Woolwich Pier, Hunters Hill Hotel, Boronia Kitchen, Nth Ryde RSL, Erin's, Rashays and Baia. During their placement, students had the valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world hospitality environments. This experience not only enhanced their practical skills but also provided insight into the expectations and pace of a professional hospitality setting.

2026 Music Ensembles Evening

Congratulations to all students in Years 7-12 who showcased a delightful program at the 2026 Music Ensembles Evening held on Thursday 7 May. Students from the Vocal Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Senior Orchestra presented engaging pieces they have been working on so far this year and looked fantastic in their new Riverside Music shirts. With the program spanning film, jazz and contemporary styles, students performed with confidence and sophistication. A big thank you to our music conductors Ms Nylund, Mr Brinsmead and Mr Love for their guidance and expertise during rehearsals, and to parents, friends and staff who came along to support the evening. International Students’ Forum 2026

On Wednesday 13th May, our Year 11 and 12 international students attended the 2026 International Students Forum hosted by Burwood Girls High School. The event brought together international students from public schools such as Homebush Boys, Concord High and Burwood Girls, creating a vibrant intermingling of cultures and student experiences. Throughout the day, students participated in lots of fun activities such as ice breaker games and trivia as well as listening to some fantastic musical performances of pop culture songs in Chinese and Vietnamese. There was also an invaluable Q and A session on how past international students survived the HSC as well as insights into how to best approach university life in terms of academic achievement and social experiences with the recent graduates emphasising the key points that no one talks about their ATAR at university, and that it is critical to have the confidence to build strong friendships to do well in group work tasks and to enjoy uni life, building on the positive experiences of international students' time at high school. The forum provided opportunities for students to make positive connections with peers and foster new friendships whilst also developing teamwork skills, communication skills, and intercultural understanding.

Overall, it was a memorable and positive experience for our senior international students. Everyone had a great time with lots of happy and inspired faces leaving the venue at the end of the day. We thank Burwood Girls High School for hosting such a dynamic event and we look forward to future collaborations to celebrate the cultural diversity, knowledge and commitment of all our international students.
