WLC VB FAQ Series: OUR CORE VALUES

WLC Volleyball's Mission: "A family of young women who courageously, confidently, and humbly chase excellence by daily choosing love & faithfulness."

Above is our mission statement. This guides our behaviors and culture. It helps us stay on our MISSION... so regardless of stats or performances or rankings or championships, we know that we can always succeed in and accomplish this mission because it isn't performance based.

The other thing that guides our behaviors and culture as a program is our CORE VALUES.

We talk about our core values frequently - how it applies to us on the court, but especially how it transcends to our everyday life. These values are our filter to determine if the way we're thinking, talking, and acting show ourselves to be true to our program.

Take a look at our core values, what we believe goes into them, and how we apply them.

love

"We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:19 "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12:10

In response to God's love for us, we will...

  • Love God (Play free)
  • Love each other & the team (Many roles, one team)
  • Love the calling & role we’re in ("Become, don’t compare")
  • Love the game & opportunity to compete ("Get to" mindset)

be faithful

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

Not striving for perfection, but being good enough, we will take personal accountability & responsibility with...

  • Our time (Be present)
  • Our resources (Utilize with gratitude)
  • Our bodies (Take care of them)
  • Our team progress ("Me first for us" - ask "I" "what" and "how" questions)

grow

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

We will daily grow as Christians and embrace a growth mindset and focus on giving 1% more than yesterday's self...

  • As athletes & a team (Train & compete hard & in the jungle with a growth mindset)
  • As students (We are students first)
  • As adults (Preparing for life after volleyball)

the warrior standard

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17

our style of play

If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success. -Ecclesiastes 10:10

We work to continually improve our SKILL and consistently work within our different systems on the court or "Style of Play:"

Our practice routines & training style:

More weekly routines:

  • Film and "AARs": After gamedays, we recap what went well, what we could have improved, and make goals to prepare for the week ahead in our "After Action Reviews" or AARs
  • Verse of the Week: coaches and captains pick a verse of the week to help us keep everything in perspective

Me First... For Us

"Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else." Galatians 6:4

We are accountable for our own choices and free to make better ones. If we ask better questions, we get better answers. The goal is to make better choices in the moment. These are questions we ask ourselves, not others.

Personal Accountability

  • Discipline your thoughts
  • Ask better questions of yourself
  • Take action

Personal Guidelines

  • Begin with 'what' and 'how' questions & use 'I' statements
  • Focus on action
  • "How can I do my job better today?"
  • What can I do to improve...
  • ...the situation?
  • ...my weaknesses?
  • ...my strengths?
  • How can I support the team?
  • What can I learn from this situation?

Personal Results

  • No complaining, procrastinating, or blaming
  • Change is focused on you, the individual
"An individual commitment to the group effort, that is what makes a team work."
