Indigenous Higher Education Curriculum Conference 2024 November 25-27 University of Canberra

Yuma

This November, on the beautiful and never ceded lands of the Ngunnawal people, the University of Canberra is proud to host the second Indigenous Higher Education Curriculum Conference (IHECC)

Introduction

The Indigenous Higher Education Curriculum Conference (IHECC) was started by UTS in 2022 and is now supported by an International Indigenous Curriculum Community of Practice. This conference is a pivotal event that brings together academic and professional staff from universities across Australia and internationally.

Ongoing conversations within and across universities have provided valuable insight into the need for more opportunities to build an understanding of Indigenous culture and to collaborate on incorporating Indigenous knowledges, perspectives and pedagogies into curricula. IHECC provides a platform to showcase the outstanding work being done within universities locally, nationally and internationally, and to learn from each other, gaining insights into best practices across the sector, and learning about the challenges that universities continue to face in this work.

By doing this, it aims to equip all students with the professional capabilities necessary to work effectively with and for Indigenous Australians in their chosen professions through achieving the Indigenous graduate attributes.

As Professor Juanita Sherwood from Universities Australia states in the Indigenous Strategy 2022-2027, “Australia’s universities have a responsibility to be the beacons of light in delivering social justice agendas across its many curriculums and courses.”

This event also provides the opportunity to develop strong connections across the higher education sector to continue developing strong and sustainable teaching and learning practices within this pivotal and ever evolving area.

The Indigenous Higher Education Curriculum Conference will continue to foster the international community of practice forum to promote the ethical embedding of Indigenous perspectives across higher education curriculum and provide a setting for university academics to share their examples of design, development and delivery of Indigenous curriculum.
