Totally Hip
Dr. Melody Whitney, an assistant clinical professor and small animal surgeon at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, or MSU CVM, recently completed a complex orthopedic procedure on two canine patients, marking the return of total hip replacements to the college. While orthopedic surgery is already a highly specialized field, total hip replacement requires additional intensive training.

Dean's Message
Dear Friends,
It has been a remarkably busy few weeks here at the CVM. Earlier this month, we hosted our annual Open House event. School children and families from all over the region - some traveling several hours - spent time with our students and our patients, learning about all the work that goes on here at the CVM. The feedback I received was uplifting and a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do. I am confident that many of the bright-eyed children who attended Open House will one day return to the College as our veterinary students.
It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Marc Seitz has been awarded the highly competitive 2025 Alumni Association Graduate and Professional Teaching Excellence Award. As you all know, we are home to some of the most remarkable veterinary professionals in the world, and seeing one of our faculty members recognized as such is always gratifying, to say the least.
I would also like to remind our alumni that Alumni Council nominations are open until April 30. If you would like to nominate someone, please send the name of the nominee, their contact information, and a brief statement about why they would be an ideal candidate to msucvmalumnicouncil@gmail.com. Self-nominations are welcome, and all CVM alumni are eligible to be nominated or apply.
All the best,
Dr. Nicholas Frank, Dean

‘Unlike Any Others’ – MSU Shelter Medicine Program combats pet overpopulation with top-tier, unique education
As a fourth-year Mississippi State Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student, Camryn Carlson has completed more than 100 solo surgeries.
That number will continue to grow during her time in the university’s Shelter Medicine Program. This mandatory rotation accounts for the majority of DVM students’ surgical experience, as they complete an average of 55 spay and neuter surgeries for rescues and shelters statewide during the two weeks.
