What is Built Environment Month?
Built Environment Month! It’s all about raising awareness of how buildings are a critical part of the net-zero transition, making students (and their parents) aware of the huge range of career opportunities available, and having a bit of fun making stuff! We are encouraging every primary school in the Borders to get involved as part of this year’s STEM focus. There are a variety of things happening and you can find resources on this website. You can use them in November and beyond!
- Live Lesson on 8th November 2025
- Launch of A-to-Z of Construction Jobs booklet for use in class
- Inviting parents and local businesses from the sector to visit schools (contact your local DYW team for support with this)
- Padlet of resources for teachers to choose from
- Launch of the EcoHouse competition for schools for this year
This is part of a Scottish Borders Energy Efficiency Supply Chain project which is being led by the Council and includes things like up-skilling builders and community-based retrofit as well as education outreach.
Eco House Design Competition
Design an Eco House and enter the Borders Construction Forum competition. The design can be a model, a drawing or a plan and students can take part individually or in small groups. See the download for details.
The deadline for this competition is February 14th 2025 so you can take this beyond Built Environment Month.
A-Z of Construction Careers Resource
An A-Z of Construction Careers resource has been created to be launched in Built Environment Month. This super resources gives pupils and idea of some of the roles that are involved in the construction industry. Why not use it to let your class reflect on a career they might like in the future or as part of some work on skills for life and work. Each page links to a website with more information.
