Whole School Cross Country Carnival

On tomorrow - Friday 3 May

Our annual school Cross Country Carnival will take place tomorrow, Friday 3 May (Term 2 | Week 1).

Our Junior PE classes have been involved in various types of activities in class to get them ready for the day. The format for the Cross Country this year is to minimise the impact on our Senior students and to encourage all students to participate in this whole school event.

The Cross Country is designed for students to run, jog or walk the 3, 4 or 6 km course along the beautiful Tallow beach and then celebrate their efforts with a BBQ, a cool drink, some great beats from our bands and a Presentation Assembly.

Students wishing to compete for a place at zone will be allocated the front row of their age group to give them the best chance of achieving their goal.

On the day, Period 1 and Recess will run as normal. Period 2 will be shortened to finish at 10:50 am and we will move to the Oval for the Cross Country Carnival. Afterwards, Periods 4 and 5 will be normal classes.

We ask that all parents and students see the Cross Country Carnival as an opportunity for students to take part in whole school events and to engage in activities with teachers and peers outside the normal classroom environment. We appreciate your support with this by encouraging your child to take part in the carnival.

If your child is injured or sick and cannot participate, we will provide for them on the day. There is no need for them to take the whole day off school. Please send your child to school with a handwritten note advising us why they are not able to take part.

Parents are welcome to come along and cheer on their child. Please see the approximate starting times below:

  • 18, 17 and 16 Years Boys - 6 km - starting approx. 11:20 am
  • 15 and 14 Years Boys - 4 km - starting approx. 11:23 am
  • 12 and 13 Years Girls - 3 km - starting approx. 11:26 am
  • 12 and 13 Years Boys - 3 km - starting approx. 11:29 am
  • 15 and 14 Years Girls - 4 km - starting approx. 11:32 am
  • 18, 17 and 16 Years Girls - 4 km - starting approx. 11:35 am

ANZAC Day 2024

Byron Bay ANZAC Day March and Service

On ANZAC Day many Byron Bay High School Student Representative Council (SRC) students marched proudly along the main streets of Byron Bay, from Main Beach to the War Memorial Gates on Marvell Street. BBHS School Captain Floyd W and Student Senior Executive Student Jake K presented an outstanding speech to the community during the Memorial Service. Jessica D also laid the wreath on behalf of Byron Bay High School.

The March from Main Beach to the War Memorial Gates will always be an important part of Byron Bay’s ANZAC Day traditions. We thank the RSL sub-Branch for inviting our students to march and speak on behalf of the youth of Byron Bay.

Year 10 Emu Gully Camp

'The Challenge Camp'

At the end of last term, an intrepid group of Year 10 students made the journey back to Emu Gully for Round 2 (after completing their first experience in Year 9) for another epic adventure.

The students were greeted by the enthusiastic camp staff and briefed on what was to come over the next 3 days. Essentially, the camp was centered around the theme of Team Work and Leadership, contextualised by stories from various modern wars.

Some of the highlights included:

  • As a team, crawling through underground tunnels in complete darkness and managing to escape.
  • Carrying wounded soldiers (students) on stretchers through deep mud pits and obstacles in complete silence.
  • Carrying these soldiers (students) on stretchers in the darkness of night, with only a small number of torches to assist, through treacherous terrain.
  • As a year group, pulling a truck over a distance of a couple of hundred meters!
  • Paintball, swimming in the dam, the warm showers, eating the delicious food and of course, the great conversations around the firepit, cooking marshmallows and star gazing in the clear night sky.
As a Year Advisor, this would have to be one of the best excursions we have been on as a group.

I observed so many students stepping up and exhibiting so much growth in such a short amount of time, particularly within the context of team work. I am so proud of all of these students and the great young adults they are becoming, I can’t wait for the next one!

Some quotes from the Year 10 students about Emu Gully:

  • Great memories with our friends” - Matilda and Mia
  • “You have to do it” - Sienna
  • An experience of a lifetime” - Poppy
  • It brought our Year group closer together” - Kynan
  • It pushed us out of our comfort zone in a good way” - Ryder
  • Grew our connection with our peers” - Marlowe.
