Outline of the artistic vision and community engagement for the Mapping project in Flores.
MAPPING - First Edition
The development on a 3 km art trail through Lajes das Flores featuring interactive installations, performances, the devenlopment of a cultural archive and gameification through hidden art treasures that showcase the island's cultural heritage.

MApping Flores features local artists creating site-specific installations.

Nina and her chior of local women performing "Longínqua," a musical piece inspired by the arrival of the first settlers in the Azores.

The performance "Doba, Doba, Dobadeira" by local women from the agricultural services of Lajes, Alexandra Kreija’s, art frame installation on the beach of Lajes and Gabriella Honeybud’s street theater portraying the stories of Flores through their local plants, the hortensis.

Mapping Flores features interviews and historical research.

Capturing the memories of Lajes’ last whaler, preserving their voices within hidden art treasures.
Interviews with both children and adults, blending past and present.

Mapping Flores features community workshops.

The community under guidance of Laboratorio Experimental do Som recorded and mapped the local sounds of Flores, and integrated them into the art trail.

The work involved creating a detailed audio map of Flores unique soundscapes; with intitutions as well as the general public.

Closing Fastival, Opening Paths

The project culminated in a public exhibition day featuring a guided tour through the live performances of local artists, the presentation of the workshop together with the participants, an interactive activities treasure hunt, along a 3 km route, showcasing the cultural heritage and stories of Flores.

30 residents were actively involved in the development of the trail.

Approximately 50 participants, in age from 3 to 78, enjoyed a shared lunch together midway through the trail.

What stays after the event?

Art Treasure Map of Lajes das Flores

A treasure map leads participants to hidden art treasure boxes, each containing a QR code that unlocks a digital archive of stories, digital version of the performances, and much more, accessible to anyone exploring the trail at all times.

The treasure map can be found at the Câmara Municipal building or accessed through the Geocaching app, guiding participants to hidden art pieces around Lajes.
