Don't Be The Weak Link

Working in Groups

Richard Tuckman’s Theory of Group Development

First presented by psychologist Bruce Tuckman in his 1965 article Developmental Sequence in Small Groups, these 5 stages have proven to be consistently relevant to all types of groups and teams.

Stage 1: Forming

This is the stage where everyone comes together, whether by choice or assignment. In Stage 1, you should get to know each other and create your group charter.

Stage 2: Storming

In this stage, your group will begin to work on how to complete your group project. You will decide on the topic, scope and audience. During this stage, you may have differing opinions and ideas. It's important to take the time to work these out and agree on a strategy. Whether by consensus or compromise, you have to make it work for the good of the project. This is the hardest stage of the group development process.

Stage 3: Norming

Now we're getting somewhere! This stage begins when everyone knows their role, understands what is expected of the project and recognized the part they will pay in the project.

Stage 4: Performing

This is the project implementation stage. Depending on the project, this is where you present, create, and/or share what you've been working on. Success!

Stage 5: Adjourning

Sadly, this is the stage where we say goodbye. It's been a great project and you've made great friends, but it's time to move on to the next project, or group, or class.
