Hyperion AWPF brings new advanced recycled water supply online

Los Angeles, California – Walsh Construction joined the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) and design-build partner Brown and Caldwell to unveil the new Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. The new facility is designed to produce up to 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of advanced treated recycled water for approved non-potable uses at Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant and at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), including cooling water and sanitary facilities. Delivered by Walsh Construction and Brown and Caldwell, the project was executed as a progressive design build delivery method. The project supports the long term transformation of the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant toward 100% water recycling, an integral component of the City’s Pure Water Los Angeles program to reduce dependence on imported water. The Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility is designed to treat primary treated wastewater from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant and produce advanced treated recycled water for beneficial reuse. During normal operations, the recycled water is intended for non potable applications at LAX and within Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, offsetting potable water previously used for certain industrial and operational demands.

Archer Western completes temporary tie-in and bypass at South Cross Bayou WWTP

St. Petersburg, Florida - Archer Western completed a key scope of work at Pinellas County Government’s South Cross Bayou Wastewater Treatment Plant to support relocation of the existing 48‑inch Denitrification Filters influent pipe and flow meter from below grade to above grade. This was one of the most challenging operations our Florida Water team has faced. As the team explains in the video above, their planning began more than two years ago with early brainstorming that evolved through constant evaluation. From detailed 3D scanning to scenario modeling, the team worked through every obstacle to ensure alignment, efficiency, and readiness long before construction began. To accomplish their task without the need for by‑pass pumping, the project team implemented an innovative solution by installing a temporary, engineered by‑pass pipe capable of conveying full influent flows to the filters. The temporary tie‑in and by‑pass system were developed and executed collaboratively with Pinellas County and Hazen and Sawyer, ensuring all operational risks associated with managing approximately 30 MGD of plant flows were fully addressed and mitigated.

St. Louis, Missouri - The final girder is in place on the northern bridge for the I‑270 Chain of Rocks Bridge replacement. The northern span is the second of the twin bridges built by Walsh Construction; delivering wider shoulders for improved safety and designed to accommodate future six‑lane capacity when warranted. The following are construction numbers for the new structure:

  • Number of girders = 296
  • Number of cross frames = 1,669
  • Number of laterals = 268
  • Number of bolts = 74,745
  • Total weight of westbound bridge = 14,783,690 lbs.

The I‑270 Chain of Rocks Bridge Replacement project replaces the aging 1966 bridge that carries Interstate 270 over the Mississippi River between Granite City, Illinois, and north St. Louis County, Missouri. Walsh is responsible for constructing new twin bridges to modernize this critical freight and commuter corridor, beginning with a new structure, complete in December 2024, which was built just south of the existing bridge, and now working on construction of the second span on the original alignment.

DFW Terminal F: Modular Construction, Precision, and Partnership

Dallas, Texas - This newly-released film chronicles how Innovation Next+, a design‑build joint venture led by Archer Western, embraced modular construction at an unprecedented scale, fabricating six mega‑modules offsite, then moving them down a taxiway and setting them in place. The largest module measured 278 feet by 136 feet and weighed 3,320 tons, a record‑setting feat that DFW and the JV describe as the largest modules moved for a terminal expansion at any airport. The operation is part of the first phase of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport's (DFW) Terminal F, being delivered by Innovation Next+, a design‑build joint venture led by Archer Western and Turner Construction Company with Phillips May Corporation, H. J. Russell & Company, and CARCON, alongside design partners PGAL, Gensler, and GFT. The program centers on a nearly 400,000‑square‑foot, double‑loaded concourse and a new Skylink station. As DFW’s first all‑new terminal build in two decades, the design will expand capacity while elevating the customer experience. Construction launched in mid‑2024 and the first phase is scheduled to be operational in 2027.

New Onslow Beach Bridge opens to traffic

Jacksonville, North Carolina - The new Onslow Beach Bridge is now open on Camp Lejeune. Built by Archer Western, the new $62 million bridge replaces the 72-year-old swing bridge that connected Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to Onslow Beach for decades. The single-leaf bascule bridge was accelerated due to storm damage from Hurricane Florence in 2018 and the age of the original structure, delivering a more resilient and modern crossing now open to traffic. The bridge’s bascule design was selected for its quick operation and ability to provide a clear, unobstructed navigation channel for mariners. Unlike a swing bridge, which rotates around a central point within the waterway, the bascule bridge lifts vertically, improving both safety and efficiency for marine traffic. Designed to serve both military and community needs, the new bridge features two 11-foot travel lanes with three-foot shoulders and supports a wide range of tactical vehicles. It also includes a six-foot-wide sidewalk, providing safe pedestrian access between the mainland and Onslow Beach. During final checks, Archer Western Site Safety Officer Heath Ries was captured operating the bridge’s control panel, guiding the Onslow Beach Bridge into its closed position.

Archer Western tops out flyover connection along I-26/I-29 Interchange Improvements

Dorchester County, South Carolina - At the I‑26/I‑95 Interchange Improvements Project, Archer Western recently topped out Bridge 1; the future flyover connecting I‑95 southbound to I‑26 eastbound.
