Spring Season's Ends With A Thriller
Roanoke College closed out the 2025 season with plenty of energy and accomplishments. Entering the ODAC Championship ranked 7th behind Ferrum, the Maroons faced off against 2nd-ranked Bridgewater College in the opening round.
The first game turned into a 12-inning thriller, with both teams answering each other at every turn—each Maroon run was quickly matched by the Eagles, and vice versa. The breakthrough came when Leah Butts stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. After taking a first-pitch strike, Leah ripped a double into the gap, giving Roanoke a decisive lead.
The Maroons carried that momentum into game two, where pitcher Maggie McCray sealed the win with a strikeout to eliminate Bridgewater from the tournament. Roanoke went on to win the second round series 2–1, capping off a memorable postseason run.

Alumni Corner
Alumni Corner
Kelly Higbie
This month's alumni Corner Features the one and only Kelly Higbie. Kelly left her mark on Roanoke College Softball in a big way. As a freshman, she helped lead the Maroons all the way to the NCAA Woman's Softball National Championship Finals and picked up some major honors along the way. That season, she was named ODAC Rookie of the Year and earned Most Outstanding Player at both the ODAC Tournament and the NCAA Regional in Newport News.
From there, Kelly kept building on her success. She became a First Team All-ODAC pitcher, and even today, she’s still in the top five of several program records. She continues to hold the record for most pitching appearances with 129, finishing her career with 383 strikeouts over 705.2 innings pitched. On top of her playing career, Kelly also came back as an assistant coach, making an impact both on and off the field.
Kelly graduated Roanoke in 2015 with a Sports Management major and a concentration in Marketing. Higbie says that some of her favorite memories during her time at Roanoke happened in Commons while getting brunch. Here, Kelly and her friends would recap the weekend activities for hours! On the field she says one of her favorite memories was beating the Tufts in the opening round of the Championship Finals as a freshman in front of the home crowd at Moyer.
After Graduation she stayed in the Athletics world working in the athletic communications department at Roanoke before joining a sports marketing agency in North Carolina. Today Kelly works for Perfect Game managing partnerships which is in Pennsylvania where she now lives with her husband and dog!
