NWSSDTP /NWCDTP bursaries Methods@Manchester Summer school 2025

Eligibility

A limited number of bursaries (offering 50% off the reduced rate fees for any Summer School course) are available for PGR applicants studying at institutions within the North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) and the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP).

Therefore if you are a PGR studying within University of Manchester, Lancaster University, University of Liverpool, Keele University or University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), Manchester Metropolitan University, Royal Northern College of Music or University of Salford you are eligible to apply for one of these bursaries.

Required statement of support from supervisor

Please note that as part of the application you will be required to submit a supporting statement from your doctoral supervisor. We will not be able to process your application without this statement, so please ensure this is also (separately) submitted by the application deadline.

You will need to provide your supervisor with the following information:

  • The statement should be emailed to methods@Manchester.ac.uk and the email subject line should be “SS 2025: applicant's full name”. (e.g. SS 2025: Sarah Chen)
  • It should be a maximum of 300 words and should address the following two points (and include the applicant's and the supervisor's full names and institution):
  1. The applicant’s academic and personal qualities and suitability for this course (in terms of background knowledge/experience, stage of study etc).
  2. How the course will directly benefit the applicant’s doctoral research.

Application form

As an applicant for the NWSSDTP/ NWCDTP bursary you will also need to complete a short application form. As well as information about your doctoral study, you will be required to answer the following longer questions. These are designed to ensure we are allocating bursaries on the basis of applicants' suitability for the course they are applying for and that applicants have explored alternative sources of funding:

  • Explain why the course is important for the methodological approach you are taking and your stage in your PGR programme (max 150 words).
  • Detail any relevant prior experience, demonstrating that you have met any course requirements or stipulated background (if stated on course details) (max 150 words).
  • Provide details of any funding/scholarship you receive for your doctoral study and the nature of this funding (e.g. fees, sustenance, conference data collection support) and whether it is possible for this funding to cover your Summer School course fees.

Please access the application form below. Your application will not be considered unless it is complete - ie ALL questions answered and a supervisor statement submitted (it is your responsibility to ensure your supervisor submits a statement by the application deadline).

Application form and submission dates

We have two NWSSDTP/NWCDTP bursary deadlines in order to facilitate sending out decisions in a more timely fashion.

If you are able to submit your application to the earlier deadline you should do. If we don’t manage to allocate a bursary to you in this first wave, we may consider your application along with other applications submitted in time for the second deadline.

All applications will be assessed with respect to the full information available to us, including other sources of funding available to the applicant.

  • Submission by Sunday 30 March 2025 (for first round decisions)
  • Submission by Sunday 4 May 2025 (for second round decisions).
