Creating a Retro Character in Adobe Illustrator

Creating a character in Adobe Illustrator is your artistic playground, where your imagination takes the lead. Whether you're an aspiring artist or a seasoned designer, Illustrator is your canvas. In this session, we'll explore a variety of tools, from the precise Pen and Pencil tools to the versatile Shape Builder and Shape tools, along with the versatile Pathfinder tool.

  • Import or Place the Character Reference: Start by opening Adobe Illustrator and creating a new document. Import the reference image of the character you want to replicate using the "File > Place" command.
  • Create a New Layer: In the Layers panel, establish a new layer dedicated to your character, keeping it separate from the reference image.
  • Tracing with Pen Tool: Utilize the Pen Tool (P) to trace the character's outlines, shapes, and details, creating paths by clicking and dragging to form curves.
  • Adjust Stroke and Fill: Once you've created paths, modify the Stroke and Fill settings in the Control panel, possibly eliminating the stroke and applying a fill color to match the character.
  • Use Shapes: For geometric components like eyes, mouth, or clothing, employ basic shape tools like the Ellipse Tool (L) and Rectangle Tool (M).
  • Have some fun with it!
