Hello! My name is Karina Hernandez and this is my digital art final project! I was really inspired by the idea of conveying change through the symbolism of butterflies.
Inversion of the butterfly effect
This piece visualizes change as both destruction and rebirth. The divided composition, split among contrasting colors, textures, and environments, reflects the instability of transformation. The butterflies, rendered in surreal, almost distorted forms, act as messengers moving between these fractured worlds.
Sailing in Flight
This piece explores change as a layered, historical process. The black-and-white background evokes memory and the past, while the oversized, vividly colored butterflies interrupt that stillness with movement and life. Their scale shifts the power dynamic, nature becomes dominant, rewriting the narrative of what once was.
Thoughts Take Flight
This portrait focuses on change as an internal, psychological experience. The butterflies emerge directly from the subject’s head, symbolizing thoughts, identity, and self-perception in flux. The contrast between monochrome butterflies and bold, artificial backgrounds suggests a tension between inner transformation and external expectations.
Overflow
Set within an urban landscape, this work examines the tension between control and natural change. A human hand attempts to interact with or perhaps guide the butterflies, yet they move freely, multiplying and dispersing beyond its reach. The butterflies represent organic transformation, uncontainable, fluid, and alive, contrasting with the rigid architecture of the city.
