STUDIO 903 CTE GRAPHIC DESIGN 1 | SAMPLE PORTFOLIO

FINAL PROJECT • PRINT AD • MAY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

It's the end of the semester and for our final project, we are working on a Print Ad. This week we are asking this question: How can you effectively apply graphic design principles and techniques to create an impactful and persuasive print advertisement, showcasing your cumulative skills and knowledge gained throughout this course?

We learned about the role of the graphic designer in marketing and advertising as well as the importance of knowing your target audience when designing an ad. We learned about the FOUR PARTS OF AN AD 1) HEADLINE 2) IMAGE/KEY VISUAL 3) COPY and 4) SIGNATURE. Then, we learned how to photograph our product and use basic photo editing and retouching to make the product photo ready for the key visual in our print ad. We completed a Plan Your Ad worksheet to form a plan for our design; this involved identifying the target demographic, considering the pathos (feelings), logos (facts) and ethos (credibility) used in our print ad as well as selecting a specific strategy to sell the product we selected. Then we had to write the headline, copy and sort out the CALL TO ACTION for our print advertisement. I chose a bottle of Zicam gummy vitamins (fruit drops) for my product. For the final project, the creative process involved research -- both reading about and watching videos on advertising tools and techniques, brainstorming and sketching.

My Screenshots in Ai and Photoshop

I used the Plan Your Ad worksheet sort out the four parts of my ad, and it really helped me to have a solid plan when I began to layout and compose my design on the computer. I also took the pictures of my product with the cameras in Studio 903, then used Photoshop to edit, retouch and resize the product photo for placement in my Ad. I used Adobe Illustrator for layout and composition of my print ad and worked in both Illustrator and Photoshop to prepare the Zicam and Target logos I found online. This is the final result below.

BOOK COVER • JANUARY 2021

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

We're back from Winter Break and also back in action in Studio 903. This week we learned a bit about layout and composition and how to the elements & principles of design to create compelling graphics for book covers. Then, we designed our own book covers using both Vector and Raster image editing software. I made my cover in Gravit Designer and chose to create a new book, sort of an autobiography. Once the design was completed, I exported book spine and book cover design as PNGS and placed them into the Mockup Template in Photopea. I made a few small edits to size the images perfectly. The final mockup of the design is below.

PERSONAL BRAND • MAY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we go to work using BOTH Raster and Vector image editing programs. We learned more about logo design while defining our personal brand to create some assets our personal use. I started this week with research, first I took Creative Types test online and discovered I am an Adventurer!

My Creative Type: The Adventurer. Ideal Collaborator: The Artist.

I used the results of #mycreativetype to help me narrow down some ideas for my tagline, then I continued brainstorming, and sketched my ideas for my logo.

Sketches for My Personal Brand Logo
My screenshots from Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

I used Adobe Illustrator to design a combination LOGO with a monogram symbol using my initials + my name. Then, I created a STYLE GUIDE with a color theme, primary & secondary typeface selections; a tagline, and inspiration images to help define my personal brand overall. I made my Style Guide in Adobe Illustrator using the template provided. Finally, used Photoshop to create a new, personally branded HEADER IMAGE for my portfolio on this Portfolio. I kept everything consistent with my freshly defined personal brand from the colors palette, to the typefaces selected and in the creation of additional elements for my header image above. I'm very happy with how these assets turned out.

GRADUATION MATERIALS • MAY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we learned a bit more terminology as we embarked on a project for our client, MVHS! Our project this week was to create a mini branded package which included the Program Cover and Ticket for the Class of 2023 Graduation Ceremony. First, we talked about client briefs, and reviewed the basic brand guidelines for the MVHS logo. This helps guide us about use of colors for this project, but there was still plenty of freedom to design what we wanted using the guideline as a starting point -- and for this project we could decide which program (Ps or Ai) we wanted to work in to design the materials. We were instructed to demonstrate the principle of unity across all the pieces (similar to the campus safety signage); and we also had to choose at least one element of design and one principle of design to focus on in this project. I chose to work in Photoshop for this one. But I sketches ideas that could be done in either PS or Ai.

My sketches.

As part of my creative process, I experiment with AI functions using Adobe Firefly to get some ideas to help with my creative process.

For my design, I chose to focus on the elements of texture and space with the principles of unity and alignment.

CAREER STUDY • APRIL 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we studied careers related to Graphic Design. We selected a career that we are interested in and then did research on that career using tools like MyNextMove.org. In addition to learning about the career, we also examined our our own strengths, skills & interests and careers we may be personally suited for through CACareerzone.org. Then, we created a recruitment flyer for the career we studied using the key information we discovered. The career chose to study is a Graphic Designer and I used Adobe Illustrator to create my recruitment flyer. Below is my process and my findings.

Once I had done my research, brainstormed and sketches my ideas for the recruitment flyer. I made 2 thumbnails and decided to proceed with the one on the left.

My thumbnail sketches. I proceeded with the sketch on the left.

I tried to capture the key things I learned Graphic Design as a career using text, color and visuals in this recruitment flyer I made in Adobe Illustrator.

I also experimented with AI features using Adobe Firefly to create stock images I could use in my flyer. I tracked my creative process with these functions on my AI Prompt Diary.

REFLECTION • WHAT I LEARNED (ABOUT DESIGN CAREERS, SKILLS & ABOUT MYSELF)

In addition to learning about the career of a Graphic Designer, I learned some really interesting things about myself. I used the web resources provided to complete a few exercises. I started with the Quick Assessment, where I chose 3 of the 6 interest areas to help me find occupations that best fit my choices. I chose Artistic, Investigative, and Realistic, which resulted in 4 careers that I might be suited for. Graphic Design was included in that list. Next, I chose the 30 Question Interest Profiler from the Profiler Activities, where my results varied slightly to my Quick Assessment choices (Enterprising replaced Investigative). Once I clicked through to View Occupations, the careers best suited to these interest areas were displayed with links to even more information about those careers. Video game design was one of them.

Finally, I used the "Pick Your Salary" Make Money Choices assessment and found out a bit more about what kind of lifestyle I could have with the salary for a job I selected from the list of the careers I was best suited for. The results of this assessment were really informative and gave me a more realistic look at how you need to budget for expenses based on your monthly income. I've been considering a career as a Graphic Designer for quite some time now, but now that I've done some additional research during this Career Study, including the profiler activities, I am now interested in looking further into Video Game Design. I might be better suited to this career path, which is also closely related to Graphic Design. Although I'm still interested in Graphic Design as a career, there are so many other options I haven't considered that align with my interests and abilities. This gives me a lot to think about.

POP ART SELF PORTRAIT MAGAZINE COVER • APRIL 2022

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

For the project this week, we are taking inspiration from influential designer, Andy Warhol and the POP Art design movement. We learned more about filters and the filter gallery in Photoshop to create a Warhol inspired self portrait for a faux magazine cover. We were provided with a bunch of different magazine covers to choose from and had to incorporate them into our final design. We working with destructive and non-destructive editing techniques, color theory, making selections and using a ton of keyboard shortcuts. There are a lot of layers in the file below, so I used layer organization, layer groups and named each quadrant of the design to practice an efficient workflow. Here is the final result.

PHOTOPEA CHOICE OPTON #1 DOUBLE EXPOSURE or OPTION #2 YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL • NOVEMBER 2020

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

It's a short week due to the Thanksgiving holiday so this week we are taking a moment to think about our thinking and reflect on our growth over the course of the term using the Habits of Mind self assessment & reflection document. For our design project, we are continuing our work in Photopea with non-destructive photo editing principles. We had a choice of 2 different projects to do over Monday and Tuesday. Samples of both are included below. This was a self-directed project of choice that gave me some freedom to decide what I wanted to design this week. I had to watch tutorials to figure out how to execute these specific techniques to get to a finished design. HEROES & MUSES • APRIL 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we got a little more conceptual with our work in Photoshop. For our project, we were to choose a Hero -- a mythical hero we are inspired by and make a conceptual piece of digital abstract art that represents them. We perfected some new techniques for compositing several images together using layer blending modes and filters to achieve a veiled effect -- all of this with the goal of visually capturing the essence of our hero or muse. This week really put our skills to the test with a requirement of 15 symmetrically balanced layers. I really had to try many different blending modes, experiment with filters and opacity/transparency on some layers to get the final result. It was a great opportunity to practice thinking flexibly, persistence, and responding with wonderment and awe! The hero I chose is Wonder Woman. Since I was a small child, I have been a big fan and always admired her strength, beauty and sense of honor in pursuit of the truth. As an adult, getting to see my favorite heroine come to life on the Big Screen portrayed by Gal Godot has only solidified my respect and awe for the powerful Amazonian Warrior.

The five words I chose for her essence are: Strength, Beauty, Truth, Warrior, Goddess. Here is my final work below.

NOUN MASHUP • APRIL 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

We are continuing our exploration of raster image editing principles, working in Photoshop this week with a photo compositing project. For this "noun mashup" project, I selected 3 non-related images: a PERSON, PLACE and THING. Then, I used non-destructive photo editing principles and techniques to create a mashup composited image telling story. The objective was to choose unrelated images, and use techniques to merge them into something that looked seamless. Doing this non-destructively is only possible with the use of layers masks, adjustment layers, blending modes and more! As a final touch, and to continue refining my typography skills, I wrote a 10 word story for my final image, and included it as a text layer. I paid attention to selection of typeface, size, leading and position on the page to be sure it works with the overall layout.

PAINTING A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO IN PHOTOSHOP • MARCH 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we are diving into the world of RASTER GRAPHICS -- these are images made entirely of pixels instead of mathematical formulas, points, lines and curves. Raster images are primarily photos and we will be using Photoshop as our image editing software for some upcoming projects. We learned a bit about Color Theory at the start of the week, so I'm also keeping that in mind as we explore the new tools and software. For this project, I had to digitally "paint" a photograph in Photoshop, and then write an original poem, inspired by the final, and include it as a text layer in the final image. This was a fun challenge!

My workspace in Photoshop. Notice Non-Destructive Editing with all my work happening on layers ABOVE the original image.

REFLECTION • WHAT I LEARNED

I learned about using new tools in Photoshop which seemed familiar from my previous experience with Adobe Illustrator - I applied prior knowledge to something new. I discovered how to make different types of selections with the different selection tools, and that some work better for certain types of images. I discovered the elliptical marquee tool worked really well for selecting the circular iris in my image; then I used the lasso selection tool to make selections of the more organic shapes. Knowing how to use the tools and which one to use at the right moment was very helpful.

Since this was our first project in Photoshop with RASTER IMAGES, I grew my skills in this area. I had to trust what I previously knew from the workspace and tools in Adobe Illustrator, and transfer those skills here to Photoshop. There were some adjustments I had to make, but I know my skills grew because I was able to build on what I knew before, and having to recall that information made me realized what I know and where I need to keep practicing. I also practiced time management on this project to ensure that I could meet the deadlines. My thumbnail sketches. I decided to merge these two concepts together for my final design.

LOGO DESIGN V2 • MARCH 2022

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

It's midterms this week and for our midterm project, we returned to our Iconic Logo design from last week to refine and revise. We discussed the inevitability and importance of revision cycles as part of the design process, received art direction with additional feedback and got to work making our changes. This is the longest we have spent on a project, and it required practicing habits of mind like remaining open to continuous learning and listening with understanding and empathy. We don't always arrive and the best solution, first. Sometimes it takes a while to achieve a solution that will satisfy both the client and the designer, and sometimes as a designer we must defer to the client's vision to deliver the final solution. Having a clear plan, understanding how, when and why to use specific elements and principles of design really help to ensure that our vision is executed in line with the client's needs. One of the things we did in class this week was to watch a couple of videos and see some "glow ups" showing how our designs can be improved with revisions and attention to the elements & principles of design. Being able to confidently discuss our design and the choices we've made to satisfy the client brief is critical in the process - this involves communicating with precision and accuracy and thinking about our thinking.

Here is the original logo v1.

Logo v1

The revisions I made to my design include brightening up the yellow, simplifying my color scheme to ensure I have no more than 5 colors in use -- there are only 2 different reds here, but I've used some blending modes and opacity to provide the illusion of value and depth. I have green, black, yellow and 2 reds in my design Additionally, I extended the stem of the flower down through the O in the word BLOOM and used the knife and compound shape tool to create the appearance that the stem is coming through the front of the O from behind the O at the top. Additionally, I selected a new typeface for the name of my business and adjusted the placement of the text so that it felt more integrated with the designs. I also created additional pages in my native file to see how the combination logo looked if I broke it apart as symbol only and text only. This was a good exercise to be sure that everything in my logo has a purpose; every piece is doing a job.

LOGO DESIGN FOR A CLIENT • OCTOBER 2022

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we learned about LOGO Design and the 3 things logos should be: PRACTICAL, MEMORABLE and TIMELESS. Simplicity is key with logo design; a logo needs to be quickly understandable and reinforce the brand it stands for right away. It's similar to what we learned about pictograms, symbols and iconography. With logos, it's more specific and personal to the client and brand the logo represents. For our project, we had the opportunity to design a logo for a real client, Mr. Chodola, that will be used here at MVHS. The client requested a Horizontal version of the logo as well as a "Stacked" or Vertical version of the logo. This was a fun challenge for our first logo design!

The client is Mr. Chodola and the Capstone program which he is the Advisor/Teacher for. The client wanted to increase awareness and branding for the MVP (My Vision Personalized) Senior Capstone course and have a logo designed that could be used to help identify this course -- to increase visibility and awareness. This was a great challenge. I got to work sketching my ideas and had to come up with 4 thumbnail sketches to share back with my classmates for review and approval. These were for 2 different ideas and I needed to work out horizontal and stacked versions of the logo. My sketches are below.

Once I got the green light from my peers, I brought my sketch into Ai and go to work building my logo. Here is the final logo design.

MIDTERM • LOGO DESIGN • MARCH 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we learned about LOGO Design and the 3 things logos should be: PRACTICAL, MEMORABLE and TIMELESS. Simplicity is key with logo design; a logo needs to be quickly understandable and reinforce the brand it stands for right away. It's similar to what we learned about pictograms, symbols and iconography. With logos, it's more specific and personal to the client and brand the logo represents. For our project, we had a choice of businesses to design a logo [with 2 variations: a stacked version and a horizontal version]. This design below is for BLOOM UNIQUE BOUTIQUE FLORALS. This is for one of the imaginary businesses we had to choose from. There was no provided "creative brief" from the client on this one.

My process on this project was similar to other projects. I started with research by researching floral companies online, and looking at their logos. Since this is for a unique floral boutique, I wanted the design to be timeless with a special flower and bright colors. Then, I brainstormed and did a brain dump in my sketchbook with everything I know about logo design. Finally, I sketched. I did 3 thumbnail sketches to explore my ideas and settled on the third sketch (below) which features a poppy and poppy pod and stack of text. This is an iconic logo design with a symbol (the poppy) and text (the name of the business).

THE HOWL COVER DESIGN • OCTOBER MARCH 2023

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week, we took a closer look at Design Trends for 2022 to get inspired for our own design of the cover for the upcoming student newsletter, The Howl Spring 2023. Studio 903 designers will be designing the interior spreads for The Howl with all the content supplied by our Journalism and Yearbook classes. Before we design the newsletter spreads, we need a cover Design! For our project this week, we had the opportunity to create our own design for submission to be considered for the publication. The chosen design is going to dictate some other style choices for the entire publication, so the colors, fonts and overall style of our cover designs will have a big impact on what the final product of The Howl will look like! Taking inspiration from at least one of the 2022 Design Trends, I chose to focus on type for my design.

I used Adobe Illustrator to create my design with some images of artwork I drew by hand.

To start my creative process, I did some research which included reading up and watching a video on the 2022 Design Trends and brainstormed some ideas for my cover; then I made 2 thumbnail sketches for 2 different cover concepts. My sketches are below.

HISTORY OF GRAPHIC DESIGN & INFLUENTIAL DESIGNER • MARCH 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

For the past 2 weeks in Studio 903 we have learned about the History of Graphic design from the origin of design in Cave Paintings to modern day designers and design movements leading to the digital revolution. To demonstrate our understanding of what we learned and our growing skills in graphic design, our project was to design a timeline with 10 historical events for the History of Graphic Design in the style of an influential graphic designer (past or present). The designer who inspired the design of the timeline below is Eric Tan. This project was created by student designer Molly Maguire in Spring 2022.

Sketch & Brainstorm Process.

Eric Tan and his artwork used as inspiration to create timeline.

Eric Tan known for his retro Disney movie posters, grew up in San Diego. Then living in London for some time. Working at Disney, he is able to make art all the time. He enjoys visiting museums and his interest for graphic design spouted from seeing Alphonse Mucha's art at the San Diego Museum of Art. As a child he loved baseball cards, comic books, action figures, Mexican candy and Garbage Pail Kids. In elementary school him and his family member Jeff began collecting comics and have been visiting con for many years. From a young age, Eric Tan would attempt to draw characters he saw such as the Avengers. Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas is one of his favorite movies and he has even made work inspired from it

He has traveled across the globe, keeping his sketchbook with him, he noted his observations. This lead him to make posters that were inspired by the cites he visited. From his travels he created "Fly", a group of limited edition prints shown at Gallery 1988. Eric Tan even tries to convey the humor of each city he visits, that may only be understood by the inhabitants of each city.

One of his favorite combinations in art is imagery and typography in his art. He likes the structure and typography of these types of posters as well as drawing the elements in them. Tan enjoys experimenting with other mediums of art like sculpting, to take a break from creating 2 dimensional art.

In this project it was important to make my events look like they belong and were planned. I discovered how to plan things out and give my form function. Making all the windows on the building would have been near impossible with using the duplicate shortcut. It sped up the process a lot.I grew upon all my existing skills and even learned new ones. Such as using more prospective tools to create more dimension.

MY FONT DESIGN • MARCH 2022

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

Today we had an opportunity to return to paper and design our own typeface by hand in our sketchbooks. Today I had to practice thinking flexibly and it was a lot of fun to return to paper without the use of the computer. It gave me the chance to practice creating, imaging and innovating! Here is my font below.

TYPOGRAPHY CHALLENGES & THIS IS ME POSTER • MARCH 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

It's Typography 101 time. This week we learned more about type and how to better use the element as professional graphic designers do. We worked on a set of 6 Typography Challenges; the final challenge was to create a This Is Me poster where TYPE is the prominent element of design. This is an opportunity to continue honing typography skills, using ONLY words to design a poster that visually describes me. It is the responsibility of every graphic artist to have a working knowledge of typography and build a personal library of fonts that they would use consistently.

Screenshot showing my 6 typography challenges completed in Adobe Illustrator.

This project helped me to become more familiar with the type tools, functions and fonts available in Adobe Illustrator, through Adobe Fonts Library and free fonts on the web at Dafont.com. The poster on Artboard 6 is 8.5 x 11" and visually describes me with 15 adjectives and 15 fonts I chose specifically for each word.

Placing all 15 words in a space in an aesthetically pleasing way required attention to the elements of size, space, texture, direction and the principles of balance, alignment, proximity, contrast and unity. The typefaces I chose illustrate the meaning of each word I selected to describe myself.

SKILLS DEMO • FEBRUARY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This project was all about demonstrating our knowledge and techniques with Vector Basics and Adobe Illustrator. This Skills Demonstration helped me to identify my strengths and areas for growth. I used this project to practice and refine my skills in Adobe Illustrator. I had to follow a set of written instructions to create 3 Artboards in a single Illustrator document. Each Artboard contained a range of items to showcase my ability to demonstrate my familiarity with the Adobe Illustrator software and a basic understanding of vector graphics. The first Artboard contains a swatch palette, color modes, text boxes and a placed image from which I sampled colors and created a set of swatches. Artboard 2 gave me some more creative freedom to design a Breakfast of Champions. On this Artboard, I had to identify the Elements & Principles of Design I used in my design, and I worked with the various panels and tools in Adobe Illustrator such as the pen tool, text tool and shape tools. On Artboard 3 I had the opportunity to showcases my creative thinking with a Robot of my own design; demonstrating the concept that form follows function. The robot has a job to do and the form it takes is directly influenced by the robot's function . For the robot, I had to provide 3 concept sketches before I designed anything on the computer.

CAMPUS SAFETY SIGNAGE • MARCH 2021

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

Our project this week was Campus Safety Signage; we are continuing our practice designing with vector graphics. The objective was to create 2 safety signs that demonstrated the principle of UNITY for the campus. We had to choose 2 signs to make from 6 different messages provided, using only vector graphics in the form of illustrated symbols/pictograms and simple text.

Earlier this week, we learned about Visual Culture and Visual Language and how pictograms, icons and symbols can be useful when making important messages clear -- especially if you want them to be universally recognized. I was able to re-word and write my own text copy for my 2 signs; getting inspiration from the research, brainstorming and sketching I did prior to designing on the computer.

Here are my sketches. I chose Handing Washing and Wear a Mask for my 2 messages. Then, I made two thumbnail sketches for each sign, and reviewed them with my peers in class to get the green light on which sketche to move forward with for each sign.

My Sketches for signs with messages for Hand Washing and Wear A Mask.

To demonstrate the principle of UNITY, I used the same color scheme, fonts and style for both signs to tie everything together. I made these in Gravit Design and used some existing universal symbols I found online and then modified them to create my own design. Throughout my process, I tried to keep it simple and clear, focus on my plan and did my best to design for "thinking fast" using icons/pictograms and as little text as possible to get my message across.

POSTCARD FOR A GOOD CAUSE • FEBRUARY 2021

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week in Studio 903, we were challenged to design a Direct Mail Postcard for a good cause that is personally important to us. We learned more about generating ideas through The Creative Process: Research, Brainstorming and Sketching (thumbnails).

First, I chose a good cause that is meaningful to me. I chose VOTER REGISTRATION and voter awareness due to the 2020 Presidential Election. Next, I went through the process of researching -- to sort out my purpose (get people to register and vote), and decide who my intended audience was (unregistered voters); then I brainstormed ideas in my sketchbook for what I wanted to include on the postcard. Finally, I did 2 sets of thumbnail sketches for the front and back of my postcard, focusing on the elements of shape, type, size and color with the principles of emphasis and alignment. The purpose of my postcard was to remind people of election day, and they must register to vote by mail or in person. The intended audience for my postcard is unregistered voters in San Diego county. I designed my postcard in Gravit Designer using the tools we are learning about!

After reviewing my sketches I decided to go with the top 2 sketches for front and back. These show the use of TYPE and SIZE with emphasis pretty clearly and I felt confident that with was a solid plan to take to the next phase designing on the computer.

CROSS-CUTTING CONCEPTS ICONS • SEPTEMBER 2021

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week week, we learned about Visual Culture and Visual Language and how pictograms, icons and symbols can be useful when making important messages clear -- especially if you want them to be universally recognized. For this project, we were asked to create a set of 7 icons for the he Next Generation Science Standards Cross-Cutting Concepts (CCCs) that show up across all sciences fields. Our client was Mr. Forrester and the Science Department at MVHS. The purpose of the Cross Cutting Concepts is to facilitate discussion of the CCCs, and aid science students in making note of them when they appear throughout their science courses. The client requested a set of 7 icons that would be easy to hand draw and each icon must be a single color so they can be rendered in black and white. The 7 icon set should demonstrate the principle of UNITY, so I chose a cohesive color palette and style for each icon that is consistent throughout the entire set. I made these in Adobe Illustrator using vector graphics I created with shapes, the pen tool and the pathfinder panel. I did my best to keep it simple design for "thinking fast."

I started with research to find out a bit more about each one of these concepts, then began to brainstorm, dumping any and all ideas down on paper. Finally I made thumbnail sketches for the icons - at least 2 for each concept. We were given examples for 2 of the concepts so I started there and let those spark my ideas about the other icons. I made 2 thumbnails for each concept. Below is an image of my sketches.

Here is my final set of icons.

GREETING CARD • FEBRUARY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week learned more about designing with Vector Graphics, visual communication, iconography and more. Since Graphic Design requires a PLAN, the Creative Process is a great system to use to ensure I have a plan for my designs on paper before I take them to the computer. For this project, I chose one element and one principle of design and use them decisively in my design. First, I researched ideas for greeting cards and brainstormed ideas for using different elements with the principles of design. I decided to use line as the element of design, with the principle of repetition. Then, came up with 2 different concepts and create thumbnail sketches for them. I reviewed my sketches with my son to get his feedback and we decided I would proceed with the first thumbnail sketch - there was a stronger use of line and repetition in that concept. Once I had this plan in place, I went to the computer and used Adobe Illustrator to create my final design.

For this project I wanted to showcase my process. Here are my thumbnail sketches below.

I just started to explore what tools to use to bring my thumbnail sketch to life on the computer. This was a fun project to work on and I made something I'm happy with to share with someone I care about. Here is the final design below.

CONCERT POSTER • FEBRUARY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week, we learned about Identifying Good Design and dug a little deeper in the basics of Vector Graphics using the Adobe Illustrator. Our job was to design a Concert Poster for our fave Band or Music Artist using the new tools and techniques we are learning about in Illustrator. I chose A$AP Rocky. Last week, we watched a series of video tutorials exploring all the tools and this week was a chance to put that information to practice to create a concert poster of our own design. We had to go through the Creative Process and Research, Brainstorm, then Sketch at least 2 thumbnails. As part of the Creative Process, we had to decide on at least one element of design and one principle of design to use in our project. For my project, I decided to focus on the elements of Color and Type with the principles of Contrast and Movement. Once we had our sketches we reviewed them with a peer in class and decided which concept to move forward with on the computer. It's important to demonstrate this process from start to finish and to document what we are learning.

Here are my 2 thumbnail sketches for this project. I did one more to finalize my ideas!

ROCK THE HILL CONCERT POSTER • SEPTEMBER 2023

E & P FLASH CARD • SEPTEMBER 2023

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we learned a bit about The Creative Process: Research, Brainstorming & Sketching and how to utilize this process for each project to formulate a plan before designing on the computer. Interestingly, we had already done most of this process work in the last week as we learned about (and defined) the Elements and Principles of Design. We event worked through the sketch phase by creating the E&P grids in our sketchbooks. For the project this week, we had to select one of drawings of the Elements and Principles and re-create our own drawing in Adobe Illustrator as a flash card.

This was a little challenging, as we were also just learning about the Illustrator interface and basic tools this week. We watched tutorials and practiced applying what we had watched in class. Then got to work using Ai for the first time! For my flash card, I chose my drawings for Shape and Contrast (seen below).

ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN • JANUARY 2024

INTRODUCTION • WHAT I DID

This week we learned about the Elements & Principles of Design and how they are the building blocks of good design. For this first project, we created two organized grids with a graphic representation of each of the 8 Elements and 8 Principles of Design our Sketchbook. This project helped me to better understand the art we see in everyday life, and I really enjoyed the process of figuring out how I wanted to visually represent each of these elements and principles. Now I have a much better understanding of what the Elements & Principles are and how I might be able to use them in my design. I also now have a visual vocabulary tool in my sketchbook I can refer back to through this term. Winner!

ABOUT ME • JANUARY 2024

Hi, my name is Laura Lee Juliano. This is my SEVENTH year teaching, but I have been working in the Arts, Entertainment, Media and Marketing Industries for many years now. I live in Carlsbad, and grew up right on the border of Vista and San Marcos off of Sycamore Avenue. I went to San Marcos Elementary, San Marcos Junior High and San Marcos High School (RBV opened the year I started High School). I was/am a proud Knight, but am thrilled to be a TIMBERWOLF at MVHS!

Prior to MVHS, I worked at LEGOLAND California Resort for 18 years, and enjoyed my time there as Entertainment & Events Manager/Show Producer and most recently as a Creative Services Specialist in the Marketing Dept. You can read more about this on my home page.

I am married to a wonderful guy, Dave, and we have a 15 year old son, Lucas. Dave is the Marketing Director at the Old Globe Theater, and he enjoys music, movies, pop culture and supporting our son's baseball teams.

MY FAMILY & PETS

Lucas sophomore at SCHS, and his favorite sport is baseball (he plays all year between his school team and travel teams). He also plays soccer, loves his dogs and music; plays piano, video games, chess and is currently learning how to drive and binging House -- I like the cool medical mystery of it, too!

We have 2 small dogs -- Gizmo and Chewie -- and they are adorable and mischievous. They even have their own instagram account @gizmo_and_chewie check it out and give them a follow.

I love Art & Graphic Design, and I continue to work as a Freelance Graphic Designer in my spare time. I also love to paint and love COLOR! I am proud to participate in the online #CreativeSprint community - it's thrilling to be a part o f the creative challenge and make something new every day.

My other interests include hiking, wildflowers, photography, botany, reading and listening to audiobooks and podcasts whiles hiking, binge-watching Outlander (I am really into historical fiction), spending time with my friends and family, live music, theatre, my dogs, going to my son's sporting events and traveling - which I hope to do more of!

I'm really looking forward to getting to know each of you. I'm excited you have found your way to Studio 903, and that I get to share what I know with you.

Please ask questions -- I LOVE QUESTIONS! I promise that if I don't know the answer, I will find out for you.
