Dean's Message

Dear Friends,

This month has a singular theme, which is one of graduation. On May 13, one hundred and ten new veterinarians walked across our graduation stage, and I feel excited and confident about the bright futures these new DVMs represent. We also celebrated the graduation of our MS, Ph.D., and Veterinary Medical Technology students. A total of thirty-nine veterinary medical technology students graduated on May 16, and this is our largest class so far!

I'd like to extend congratulations to the students in both the DVM and VMT programs who won awards this year, and you can watch our awards and commencement ceremonies by going to our website and clicking on the video links. The Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award was also presented at the awards ceremony to a faculty member selected by the graduating class. This year’s recipient was Dr. Alex Shealy from the Shelter Medicine team, and he received this prestigious award for the outstanding surgical instruction he provides to students as they are learning how to perform spay and neuter surgeries. Our students gain significantly more surgical experience than students at other veterinary schools and perform more than 90 surgeries on average during their training.

While we have enjoyed the recent graduation ceremonies, our work at the CVM is never done. The students we graduated are replaced by a new crop of students, and we look forward to welcoming these new students into our CVM community. I am constantly humbled by the remarkable people at this institution, and I thank you for your support and generosity in helping us produce some of the best veterinary professionals in the world.

All the best,

Dr. Nicholas Frank, Dean
