2nd GRADE PROGRAMMING: Reading Rocks

2025 marks our sixteenth year partnering with the Licking County Library to welcome all NCS second graders to the downtown branch for our Reading Rocks event! Students spent time hearing "The Little Engine that Could", taking a “behind the scenes” guided tour of the library and learning about the importance of book care.

There was lots of enthusiasm from students as they received a library card, a backpack tag and a Drip Dreams ice cream voucher! Vouchers may be redeemed for a free cone once the student returns to the library and checks out an item. New this year? A Call to College gifted every student a new, National Geographic book, "Animals in the City" to build their own book collection.

4th GRADE PROGRAMMING: Wizard at The Works

It’s always a bright spot at the end of February when we welcome all Newark City Schools’ fourth graders to the Works for our annual capstone event, the play, The Wonderful Wizard of College! Written specifically for fourth graders, the story ties directly to the lessons students received last fall as part of our College & Money Savvy Wildcats curriculum.

The play follows fourth grader “Jamie” as he navigates the school day and interacts with friends, the grouchy teacher Ms. Crabapple and Gizzard the Wizard! Each character offers Jamie advice about his future - and a reminder about the power of a post-high school education.

Students also enjoyed time exploring The Works’ current art exhibit and even helped plan their own graduation party as a member of the class of 2033!

8th GRADE PROGRAMMING: 3Cs & Reality Store

A number of 8th graders blew away A Call to College teachers with their questions, attentiveness and maturity during their classroom sessions of 3 C’s (College, Careers and Cash). They came prepared to listen, learn and ask engaging questions.

They put their newfound knowledge to the test during Reality Store, a simulation game that provides real world experience for participants. Each student is randomly assigned a level of education and corresponding income and then charged with navigating life’s expenses (mortgage payments, rent, groceries, etc.) without going broke. Students are always surprised to learn the costs associated with adulting - it makes clear the advantage of education after high school graduation!
