Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.
I never take for granted the extra mile staff at Canbury go to give our students so much more than the minimum required. So here's a little thank you to Mr McGregor, who once again has been reminding us ALL why talking about men's good mental and physical health is so important. He is growing his annual 'Movember Moustache' as a not-so-subtle reminder that we all need to keep up communication and try to generally be available to help our friends and family. As he reminded us today at assembly - big boys can cry. There is no shame in sharing a problem and getting to work on it.
It was a solemn Canbury School community who gathered at 11am on Armistice Day to commemorate all those people who have lost their lives in past and present conflict. As always students were a credit to themselves and their school. Thank you everyone.
As we hurtle towards the end of term - it's coming - please do make a note of the important dates below. As always in the first instance, if you are in doubt do get in touch, in the first instance, with reception and they will be able to guide you forward.
Enjoy the weekend.
Best wishes.
Mrs Rich – Head.

Students of the week.
Year 7
Congratulations to Brooke, Noah, Emerson, Aurelia, Max and Sein who have all achieved the Platinum “Bit of a Legend” trophy on Dr Frost this week.
Arya for reflective comments and thoughtful discussion in the group with Ms Chorazyczewska.
Max and Noah for their focus and work in the Wellbeing lesson.
Congratulations to Emerson for her excellent recent achievement in Spanish.
Year 8
Eloise for her hard work on spelling and reading as well as effort in lessons.
Olivia for her work on the topic of ‘If I don’t sweat it, I don’t get it’ in the Wellbeing lesson last week.
Sophia M, Oliva B and Elizabeth for their outstanding focus and excellent participation in the group with Ms Chorazyczewska.
Amazing performance by Lexi in lacrosse this week. Her consistent passing ability helped lead her team to an emphatic victory.
Some great descriptions of climate graphs from all of Year 8 - but especially Hattie, Olivia, Alex, Oliver, and Danai.
Lexi for an incredibly 'out of the box' thinking in the Social Group work with Ms Lansdell. When asked to think of a creative question, Lexi suggested "Do you like being you?". We've got to agree - that's one super creative question!
Year 9
Lee for being superb in Maths. Mr Bourgi says she is the star of his Year 9 Maths group this week where she excelled in learning and understanding Standard Form.
Great effort from Lysander, Mason, Benjamin, Alfie, Eric and Remi when putting their solving algebraic, skills to use changing the subject of a variety of formulae.
Harry B for his dedication and consistency in achieving his personal goals.
Year 10
Lloyd and Francesca continue to impress Senora Porter with their ability to speak spontaneously in Spanish.
Year 11
Well done to Judah and Sam for extending their answers in the Spanish role play without any prompting!
Sixth Form
Once again, well done to Layla for going the extra mile and helping others during lunchtime.
Beautiful Bunting.
Students did some cracking work this week on bullying - why it never helps anything, why it's always a poor choice to start it or get involved in it, but, also, why sometimes we might do it. Some very considered discussions were had. As part of the work they created this fabulous bunting, which Mr Fairbrass strung across the hall to remind us all why bullying is always a really rubbish choice.
Champions!
Over the last two weeks, Canbury’s dodgeball teams have been competing in the annual SSSSA dodgeball tournament. KS3 were first up last week, where, against fierce opposition and close calls, they ended up securing silverware and winning the Championship competition. What was most pleasing about this result was that the team included students from all year groups in Key Stage 3.
On Monday this week, it was KS4’s turn. After a very competitive group stage, Canbury managed to qualify for the Premier League knockout competition. Canbury lost in an incredibly close semi-final to Bensham Manor and ended up winning the 3rd place play-off match.
Well done all those who took part!
Movember again - and why it's always good to talk.
Every Movember, men around the world, but also in Canbury sprout magnificent 'staches, writes Mr McGregor. These are definitely not for style points but to spark conversations around men’s health. From prostate and testicular cancer, to mental well-being, these furry face friends help raise awareness and funds for life-changing initiatives. Whether it’s a tiny toothbrush 'stache or a bushy bristle beacon, each whisker has a purpose: to change the face of men’s health, one follicle at a time!
What to do you need to do? Well it would be amazing if you could start a conversation with someone around you - as we know sometimes this is the really difficult bit, especially with people who may be struggling. On the website here there are some conversation scenarios to help make this easier.
Finally don't forget the 'Moustaches through History' house event on Tuesday 19th Movember at lunchtime run by Ms Littler - house points for turning up and bonus points for the winners!
Have you ordered yours?
Don't forget to order your copy of your child's school photograph, which was taken last week. If you haven't yet ordered, please get in touch with reception asap.
Nice to see you Angus!
If you do one Zoom call......do this one.
We'd like to draw your attention to an excellent free webinar for parents and carers of students who attend school in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
"I Wish I'd Known” – Young People, Drugs and Decisions, will be held on Wednesday 27th November from 6.30 - 7.30pm.
We appreciate the timing is not great, but would urge you to join for some, if not all, of this incredibly useful seminar. This free event, which focuses on young people, drug use and decisions will be brought to you by the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. It will provide a sound basis to become a little more aware of drug-related issues and what you can do to help your children to stay safer.
There is also the opportunity to ask confidential questions before the workshop via the online survey link you will receive upon sign up, and during the workshop itself. Click HERE to sign up for the link to the meeting.
The Daniel Spargo-Marks Foundation is a drug and alcohol education charity set up by Fiona and Tim Spargo-Mabbs in 2014 after the tragic death of their 16-year-old son Daniel as a result of taking ecstasy.
