Lost Canyon Summer INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2025

THANK YOU

Congratulations on your placement as one of our Summer Interns here at Lost Canyon! We are so excited that you will be serving as part of our camp family. We have much to do in the coming months to prepare for your arrival. We ask you to join us in prayer during this time to ask that the Lord prepare you for the work that you will do here. This summer will demand much of you; it will stretch you and change you. You will have amazing opportunities for ‘real world leadership’ and you will grow in your walk with the Lord.

We know your calling to be a servant of Christ at Lost Canyon will strengthen not only you, but those around you as well. We pray that God will bring you to the summer with a deep sense of calling, compassion, and service.

Christ’s love compels us to create a culture of Diversity, Equity and Belonging at Lost Canyon, so that we reflect the full breadth of the Kingdom of God and those we serve. A culture of belonging is a core value to ensure that Lost Canyon is a place where every person is welcomed, known, heard, respected and celebrated for the ways they uniquely reflect the image of God. This will be achieved through a posture of listening, learning, relationship, personal sacrifice and action.

We are committed to this in every effort from the planning of trips, the events at camp, the recruitment and training of our staff and volunteers, and how we serve one another. We are so excited to serve alongside you and can't wait to spend the summer with you!

In order to start the summer off smoothly, we ask that you read this page carefully and thoroughly as it contains a lot of information. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to Sarah Strong at sstrong@lc.younglife.org. or call the Lost Canyon office at 928.365.2900.

"THEN I HEARD THE VOICE OF THE LORD, SAYING, "WHOM SHALL I SEND, AND WHO WILL GO FOR US?" THEN I SAID, "HERE AM I. SEND ME!"- ISAIAH 6:8

statement of mission purpose

Young Life is a mission community of Christ-centered people committed to reaching adolescents with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We do this by building personal relationships with young people; by sharing our lives and participating with them in a variety of experiences through which the gospel can be heard and experienced.

Lost Canyon is designed to function as a platform through which the Gospel can be powerfully presented and experienced both verbally and non-verbally. It is our goal that staff and guests of this camp would realize a significant, life-enhancing, and perhaps life-altering experience through community, excellent service, premier facilities, and adventure; all in an exquisite setting.

Camping Staff Interns at Lost Canyon are committed to:

Personal Spiritual Growth

"But grow in the Grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18) To personally know and experience God and the resulting joy, peace, wisdom, faithfulness, and discipline that comes from a wholehearted pursuit.

Servant Leadership

"Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves." (Luke 22:27) While at Lost Canyon you are a leader. As a leader it is a privilege to serve the community: assignment teams, campers, work crews, summer staffs, fellow interns, and camping staff.

Integrity

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who walks crooked will be found out." (Proverbs 10:9) Exemplified in truth, love, faithfulness, maturity, hard work and by adhering to Young Life and Lost Canyon policy.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Proclamation

"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home." (Matthew 25:35) Going above and beyond in all that we say and do to help kids hear and see the love of God (especially when no one is looking).

Cultivating Belonging in Community

"So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another." (Romans 12:5 ESV) Participating in a diverse community of believers who reflect the breadth of the kingdom of God will be a vital part of the transformative discipleship experience for you and those you lead. With a posture of listening and learning, we will constantly be on the lookout for ways we can ensure that camp is a place where every person is seen, heard, known and belongs.

PAPERWORK

All of you have completed the required screenings so thank you for that!! If you have not yet signed your offer letter and completed the two additional tasks (changing your personal information and your government identifiers) please do so ASAP. The rest of your Workday paperwork will take place one you arrive. If you have any questions during that process, do not hesitate to reach out to me at sstrong@lc.younglife.org.

Additional Forms & training

  1. Online Health Form - please follow the link to complete your health form online. Please see the next section below for detail instructions and help.
  2. HSI Safety Training Videos - You will be receiving an email from HSI with login instructions to complete the required safety training videos. It is mandatory that you do these before you begin work here. These videos are required to be completed every three years. If you completed these at another camp within the last three years, please contact Sarah Strong at sstrong@lc.younglife.org.

online health form

You must have a completed health form on file to serve as a summer intern.

  • Your online health form account is DIFFERENT from your Staff Resources account that you used to sign your Faith & Conduct/Criminal Background Check.
  • If you have used the online health form before, use the “copy form” function and update as necessary. Make sure the following are selected: Camp = Lost Canyon, Guest Type = Summer Intern, Session = May 12 - August 8
  • IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A HEALTH FORM ACCCOUNT - then you can create a new account and fill out a health form.
  • When you are doing your health form, you will get to a point that asks for a registrant ID or access code, JUST HIT "I don't have a Registrant ID" (blue button).

ARRIVAL & Travel Information

Your official arrival and departure days are May 8th-August 11th. We will begin with dinner together on May 8th please plan on arriving between 12-4 PM. I have included a screenshot below of what I believe are your arrival/departure days based on your acceptance form. If they are incorrect or they have changed, please email Sarah Strong (sstrong@lc.younglife.org).

ARRIVAL:

  • If you are driving, you can download directions here.
  • If you are flying, it is necessary for you to get to Phoenix or Flagstaff. It is a 3 hour drive from the Phoenix airport to camp, so please plan to fly into Phoenix no later than 1pm on arrival day.
  • You will need to find your own transportation from PHX/Flagstaff Airports to camp. You can take a shuttle from the PHX Airport to Flagstaff which is the Groome Shuttle ($55 one way).
  • We would encourage you to use the intern contact sheet at the bottom of this webpage and reach out to other interns to see if they can pick you up from PHX or Flagstaff.
  • We also recommend that you look at connecting flights into Flagstaff (American Airlines). Sometimes these are very reasonably priced.

WHAT TO BRING

PACKING LIST:

  • A nice outfit or two (for banquet night)
  • Work boots or hiking boots if you have them
  • Swimsuit and beach towel
  • Sunscreen, water bottle, sunglasses
  • Laundry bag or basket and sharpie (please mark your clothing items). Laundry detergent will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you would like, as you will have access to a laundry facility and be responsible for doing your own laundry.
  • Bible, notebook, pen
  • Alarm clock
  • Shower caddy (something to organize/keep your personal items in the bathroom)
  • A flashlight or head lamp
  • Sheets, pillow, blanket and towel will be provided – but again, sometimes bringing your own makes your feel more at home!
  • Your specific job will also mandate that you bring certain items (ropes, bikes and kitchen: closed toed shoes, for example). Your supervisor should have made you aware of particular things you may need, but please feel free to call with any additional questions
  • Themed Outfits see below.
  • You are welcome to bring laptops for use in your living quarters, and wireless internet is available in several areas of camp. Keep in mind that your cabins may be unlocked the majority of the time, so be smart about what valuables you bring with you. We do get cell phone service on camp (Verizon is the best) but please note that Young Life camps have a policy of no iPods, stereos or cell phones for campers. So please use your good judgment and discretion when using your cell phones. Also, I would encourage you think about how to set this summer apart, in terms of your social media consumption – you all have a great opportunity for incredible community. Make a conscious choice to choose people over screens and devices!

Themed Outfits

Below is the information regarding themed outfits that went out to campers for each Session. While you may not be working the event that requires some of this, it would be good to pack for all in case you do. (This is the document for WC/SS but its relevant for you all as well).
