Principal's Message
As Term Three draws to a close, it's a pleasure to reflect on the many exciting events and achievements we've shared as a school community. This term has been packed with activities, from our various excursions that brought learning to life beyond the classroom, to the thrilling Athletics Carnival and the Early Childhood Sports Day, where our youngest students displayed both enthusiasm and budding athletic skills.
Book Week was another highlight, with students and staff celebrating their love of reading through creative costumes and engaging activities. The cross country events and swimming lessons gave students more opportunity to show their sporting prowess.
Thank you to everyone—students, parents, and staff—who contributed to making this term such a success. We look forward to more adventures and achievements as we head into the final term of the year.
Planning for 2025 - Preparing for Growth
As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited to see our school community continue to grow. However, this expansion also presents challenges, particularly in accommodating our increasing student numbers. To address this, we have planned the installation of a new demountable classroom, which will be placed according to our Master Plan (see link below). The Department of Finance is overseeing this installation, and we are hopeful it will be ready in time for the new school year.
In the event that the demountable classroom is not installed on schedule, we have a contingency plan in place. We may temporarily utilise a new Early Childhood classroom at Kyilla Primary School to ensure all students have a suitable learning space in the short term. We are doing everything possible to have all students on site at the commencement of the year, and we will keep you updated on this situation as it develops. Our priority is to have the least amount of impact on families as possible. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to provide the best environment for our students.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Composite Classes
Composite classes, which combine students from two year levels, are a necessary part of our school structure due to fluctuating student numbers and the need to use our resources efficiently. While the idea of composite classes may seem challenging at first, they offer several educational and social benefits and are common practice in most schools.
These classes provide opportunities for peer learning, where older students can reinforce their own knowledge by helping younger classmates, while younger students benefit from the guidance and support of their older peers. Teachers in composite classes often employ flexible teaching strategies, catering to a range of abilities and promoting independent learning skills. This learning environment fosters a sense of community, collaboration, and adaptability—valuable skills for all students.
Composite classes are an effective way to ensure all students receive quality education, despite the varying sizes of our year groups.
Grounds Sub Committee
I’d like to extend my gratitude to the Grounds Sub Committee—Lisa McGann, Nadia Tamigi, Lisa Montgomery, Nathan Calleja, and Daniel Smith—for the time and effort invested this term in developing the school’s Grounds Master Plan. You can view the plan via the link below.
Heart of the School Project
In Stage 2 of the master plan, you'll notice that the ‘grassed’ area next to the undercover assembly area is set for an upgrade. We are currently consulting with staff and students to gather ideas on how they envision using the space and what features they’d like to see included. Parents are also invited to share their feedback at the upcoming P&C General Meeting on Monday, 14 October. We hope to see you there.
School Development Day Survey Results and Future Planning
Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent School Development Day survey. Your feedback has been invaluable in guiding our decisions. After reviewing the data, the School Board has carefully considered your input and decided to keep the School Development Days as the first day of each term in 2025.
As we continue to prioritise meaningful professional development and balance staff well-being, we may conduct another survey in 2025 to gather updated insights from staff. This ongoing dialogue helps ensure that our planning aligns with the needs of our school community. We appreciate your continued engagement and support.
Education Assistant Appreciation Week
We are incredibly fortunate to have an amazing group of Education Assistants working at our school. Their dedication and passion is continually evident in the positive interactions they have with our students, parents and teachers on a daily basis.
Our Education Assistants assist in creating a warm and supportive environment that helps our students feel safe, valued and excited to learn. They demonstrate commitment, patience and flexibility to cater to the students and schools varied needs.
We wish to thank them for being a vital part of the NPPS team and for making a real difference to our community.
We hope you had a happy Education Assistant Appreciation Week!
Staff Update
Finally, we wish our wonderful music teacher, Mrs Haines, all the best as she takes leave for two terms. Mrs Haines is expecting her third child, and we will look forward to welcoming her back in Term 2 next year.
I have encouraged all staff to disconnect during the school holidays to relax and recharge. Term 3 has been incredibly busy, and it's important that we take care of ourselves so we can continue to give our best to our students each day.

Music News
Massed Choir Festival - First Rehearsal
On Wednesday 11th September, our Year 4-6 choir students attended their first Massed Choir rehearsal at Churchlands SHS along with the 12 other primary schools involved in their concert. Students from North Perth PS worked hard to rehearse the 11 pieces they will be performing for this prestigious concert in Term 4. Well done to our choir students and thank you to the parents who helped us out with this excursion.
Instrumental Music Program - Student Selection for 2025
Selection of students for entry into the instrumental program at North Perth PS for 2025 is currently underway. If your child is being considered for a placement in 2025, they will have brought home an 'Expression of Interest' form in Week 9. The selection process will continue into Term 4.
Music Assembly
Last Friday we were fortunate to have our choir, IMMS and String Ensemble students perform at a dedicated music assembly. Their consistent practise and hard work paid off in this incredible showcase of musical talent. Thanks are extended to Mrs Haines and Ms Martin for coordinating this event.
Chess
The 2024 North Perth Primary School chess tournament has seen a number of great achievements this year. We had a record number of Year 1 and 2 students taking part, with over 50 students, and a total of 135 students participating in the Year 1 to 6 chess tournament. This year had an exciting final, with two siblings battling it out for chess champion. Alex in Year 6 from Room 9 played his younger brother Oscar in Year 3 from Room 2. Congratulations Alex on winning both games, and to Oscar for being the youngest finalist in our chess tournament.
A big congratulations to all students who participated and had a go, and to Mr D and his student helpers for giving up their time to organise and run the tournament each recess and lunch breaks over the past eight weeks. Selected students from this tournament will again have a chance to take part in the interschool chess tournament against Mount Lawley Primary School later in Term 4.
Parent Information for 2024 Class Placements
Staff meet in Term 4 to establish the classes for the following school year. Teachers of the current and past year levels use their professional judgement to make the decision about where to place students for the following year.
Teachers will ensure each new class has:
- a balance of academic ability
- socially balanced groups (students are not always put with best friends to enable new friendships and social skills to develop).
Class placements are then approved by the Principal and Deputy Principals. Parents can now write to the school to express academic or social and emotional concerns that impact class placement. Requests in relation to choice of teacher will not be considered as a placement factor.
Please email northperth.ps@education.wa.edu.au by 5.00pm, Friday 11 October.

News from the Art Room
In Weeks 8 and 9, students from Years 1 - 6 worked with clay in the Art Room. The overall theme for all classes was BEASTS and the students made all sorts of amazing animals.
Athletics Carnival
We kicked things off with the Turbo Jav and Long Jump on Monday of Week 7. It was a fantastic start to our athletics events, with participation from all students in Years 1 to 6 in the Long Jump. Many set personal bests, showcasing remarkable effort. Year 3 to 6 students took part in the new Turbo Jav event. Despite it being a brand-new skill, they represented their factions with impressive performances.
On Friday, we moved to Charles Veryard to complete our events, which included Middle Distance, Sprints, Tabloids, Team Games, and Relays. We were fortunate with the weather, making for a wonderful day. It was uplifting to see everyone in their faction colors cheering each other on as they competed for victory. Throughout the day, students demonstrated our core values, and while all factions performed admirably, Bolton ultimately secured the win, followed by Woodville and Vincent. Numerous students excelled in individual events, earning medals for their outstanding efforts.
This year's carnival was a resounding success, made possible by the dedicated parent volunteers who assisted with events and supported the canteen and cake stall. We are incredibly grateful for your contributions and feel fortunate to have such a supportive community.
Early Childhood Sports Day
The sun was shining, and the excitement was high at the Early Childhood Sports Day last Wednesday. Kindy and Pre-primary students showed determination, teamwork and resilience when taking part in the running races and tabloid games while family spectators cheered them on.
Thank you to the Early Childhood staff for their organisation of the event and preparing the students for the day. A big shout out also needs to go to the P & C for running the cake stall, sausage sizzle and organising a coffee van.
Interschool Athletics
Yesterday, our Inter-school athletes team headed to Noranda Sporting Complex to compete against seven other schools. Excitement was in the air as we began with team games, where some of our students secured victories. This was followed by sprints, long jump, and turbo jav. Despite tough competition, our students pushed their limits, demonstrating resilience, especially in the middle distance events. As the temperature rose, the races became increasingly challenging, but all students persevered and crossed the finish line, showcasing their determination.
We concluded the day with relay events, where our fastest students worked together to achieve the best results for our school. Although we placed 8th overall, we are incredibly proud of how our students represented the school and themselves, and they should be proud of their accomplishments.
Book Week in Pictures
Are You Leaving Us?
If your child will be moving to a different primary school and will no longer be attending NPPS in 2025, please email Corrina Cook, at Corrina.Cook@education.wa.edu.au, advising which school they will be attending in 2025. This is important information that helps us plan classes for 2025.
Positive Behaviour Support Update
Term 4 will see staff and students focusing on teaching and demonstrating the following expected behaviours from our Values Matrix.
125th Anniversary Alumni Afternoon Tea
Our 125th Anniversary Alumni Afternoon Tea at North Perth Primary School was a memorable celebration, bringing together past and present members of our school community to honour our rich history. It was wonderful to see so many past students and staff and share stories spanning generations.
A special thank you to parents, Thea Myles and Tarryn Stain for their efforts organisation of the event. Their hard work made this occasion a real success. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to Courtney Gibb for the catering, which added a delightful touch to the afternoon.
A special mention to our school choir who performed, led by our music teacher Amanda Haines.
Education Forum with Local Member John Carey and Minister Tony Buti
Recently, our school had the honour of hosting an education forum with Local Member John Carey and the Minister for Education, Hon Dr Tony Buti. This important event brought together principals, Board Chairs, and P&C presidents from the Perth electorate to engage in discussions about current issues in education.
It was a valuable opportunity to share insights, raise concerns, and collaborate on strategies to enhance the educational experience for our students. We are grateful to John Carey and Minister Buti for their time and commitment to supporting our schools, and we look forward to continuing this productive dialogue in the future.
