Thanksgiving and Food Waste

Thanksgiving is a holiday we all know and love. It’s a time to gather with family and friends and appreciate each other for all our blessings. But one thing that does not get brought up enough is the massive amount of food waste that Thanksgiving produces. Thanksgiving promotes gratefulness and mindfulness. This Thanksgiving we should all try to limit our waste by not over consuming products.

In 2022 some of the numbers were just this:

-305 million pounds of untouched food

-7% of all greenhouse gases come from wasted food, a large portion of that on Thanksgiving Day alone

-200 million pounds of that is turkey alone

You too can be a part of the solution by Planning ahead and only buying what you need, Storing or donating leftover food, and by composting any food scraps or leftovers that have gone bad.

New Starbucks Holiday Drink: Iced Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai Latte

The most wonderful time of the year has come again, Starbucks holiday drinks. This season we have a new drink the ice gingerbread oat milk chai latte. This is a regular chai latte made specifically with oat milk and gingerbread flavoring. When you order it on the menu it comes iced but you can get it hot. Now for my controversial opinion, I believe the gingerbread ice chai latte is better than a chai latte with pumpkin coldfoam. The fans of chai lattes with pumpkin coldfoam are very passionate but now that I tasted both drinks multiple times I've decided gingerbread for the win. As I'm drinking it it tastes like holiday memories and in a good way not in a sad nostalgic way. Chai lattes are full of spices and adding ginger to that mix enhances the flavor even more. I will say it does have an odd aftertaste, it's one of those things where it's kind of nasty in a good way. This holiday season, get yourself a gingerbread oat milk ice chai latte from Starbucks. Happy holidays!

Snow Lands on Top

On November 17, the prequel to the Hunger Games series, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, was shown in cinemas nationwide. The movie adaption of the book tells the story of President Coriolanus Snow before he became a tyrant to the country of Panem. The book was released in May 2020 and Hunger Games fans were excited when it was announced that there would be a movie adaptation. After watching the movie, I immediately bought the book so that I could read it over Thanksgiving break. The movie focuses a lot on President Snow’s past and mentoring a girl named Lucy Gray during the 10th Hunger Games. In the movie, Tom Blyth is cast as President Snow while Rachel Zegler plays the role of Lucy Gray Baird. Overall, I really enjoyed watching the movie and I liked how this prequel connects to the Hunger Games trilogy.

Holiday Pie: Are We McLovin' It?

The McDonald’s Holiday Pie made its debut in 1999, as a “Toy Story 2” promotional item. However, McDonald’s fans loved this treat so much that the company decided to keep the product, even now, 24 years later. I decided, as the Chief’s resident McDonald’s worker, to buy, try, and review the Holiday Pie. Honestly, I am not McLovin’ it. McHatin’ it if you will. This was just a soggy pie crust with rainbow sprinkles and a gross cream filling that is reminiscent of a greasy, vanilla-y flavor. I tried so hard to like it because it is one of the number one fan favorites at McDonald’s, but this was not it. I would almost rather stick my head in the nugget fryer than eat the holiday pie again. -3/10, do not recommend.

Animal Print Again

I never thought I'd see the day when I thought animal print was cute. So since this trend is coming back around I'm going to give you some ways to style it. First, in order to get your animal print piece of clothing I would recommend thrifting it, since it was an old trend there will be tons of it in thrift stores. If you're just starting out I would recommend only using one print in your outfit at a time. This item of clothing that has the print could be an accessory, shirt, or pants. My ultimate hack when styling a very bold piece of clothing is adding something plain to even it out for everyday wear. So, if you have cheetah print pants I would recommend wearing a plain-colored shirt, the color of your shirt should not include any of the colors in the print. This will look too matchy-matchy and make you look like you are dressed for kindergarten. To accessorize, add black shiny ballet flats, a black beret, and your choice of gold or silver chunky jewelry. Another way to style the print is to have your accessory be animal print. You can either go with a solid color monochrome outfit wearing an animal print jacket/coat or you can wear a plain outfit and add an animal print scarf or hat. Remember even though a trend is coming back around doesn't mean it's coming back around in the same way. This means do not wear animal print skinny jeans and a different animal print shirt, style your print and a way that matches 2023 fashion.

Senseless Slides

The “bubble” slide is a fashion trend currently that I have noticed in my day-to-day life. These slides look like someone took your regular Nike slide and glued golf balls around the entire exterior and interior. There is nothing more atrociously obnoxious than a slide that looks like it belongs in an incinerator, and I am honestly not quite sure where this trend even began. When I see someone wear these sorts of slides in public there is nothing I want more than to vomit all over them and run away. So please, trendsetters, do not make something else this nightmarish come into fashion trends again.

Big Red Flop?

Releasing in February of this year, MSCHF’s “Big Red Boots” took the internet by storm, mainly because of their unique look and large price tag. MSCHF is a company very well known for making extremely unique shoes, such as the “Super Normals”, a shoe modeled after a Nike Air Force 1, but with swirly designs covering it, as well as a pair of orthopedic boots named the “Air Cast 1s”, so the Big Red Boots aren’t out of the ordinary for them. As of November, there are three styles, red, a yellow collaboration with crocs, and most recently, a black pair. The design is based around the popular cartoon, Astro Boy all the way from 1963 with several movies. The abstract design of the boots make them an interesting accent to any outfit, and their uniquness is what makes them so desired by influencers.
