March is Reading Month!

We are celebrating March is Reading Month all month long! We kicked off the month with a week of spirit days and poetry, and each day, we will all "Drop Everything and Read" as a school. Flyers came home on Friday for the fifth-grade sponsored fundraiser. Funds will support fifth grade's field trip to Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford Museum as well as Exhibition! The fundraiser will end on March 15th with a school-wide Read-a-thon. So, let's all grab a book and read!

MPS District Vision

The MPS District Vision: Lead with respect, trust and courage. Ensure an equitable, collaborative and inclusive culture. Enable all to achieve success. At Adams Elementary, we follow the vision and the work the district is doing with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by introducing a vocabulary word to students each month. The word is introduced, and defined, at the morning meeting at least once each week of the month. We also include PYP Learner Profile Attributes. The word(s) for February was race. Race--groups that people are categorized into based on physical features. The word for March is Bias. Bias is--any attitude or belief that causes unfair treatment of a person or group because of their identity. The PYP attribute was thinker in February. In March, the PYP word is reflective. Be sure to ask your student about the words shared at morning meeting.

SEL Update from Mrs. Ferguson

With only a few months left in the school year, it is time for us to change our Collaborative for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competency focus to Relationship Skills. CASEL defines these skills as “The abilities to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups.” Concerning these skills, students are exploring what it means to be a positive friend, commonalities of healthy relationships, and collaborative problem-solving. Strong relationships create compassion, reduce bullying, and encourage respect and accountability all while supporting inclusion and appreciation of differences. Students are discovering that communication and cooperation are key to healthy relationships and continue to build their skills in these areas. A strong relationship skillset is invaluable at school, work, and in our community.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as socially aware in February:

  • K: Hadley Stuart, Keegan Metcalf, Mackenzie Ireland, Dillyn Stepaniak
  • 1: Alexis Erndt
  • 3: Olivia Murray, Blakely DuLude
  • 4: Tessa Palmiter, Laine Donner, Sarah Wendt
  • 5: Keegan Arnold

Thinker - PYP Learner Profile Attribute

This month, students and staff at Adams have been focusing on developing the PYP learner profile attribute thinker. Thinkers use creative and critical thinking skills to find solutions to complex problems. They also use their thinking skills to take action when they see a need. As thinkers, we can help make ethical decisions for matters that happen both in school and at home.

The following students have been recognized as being thinkers during the month of February:

  • K: Omar Alturkmani, Avery Needham, Lochlan Vasquez
  • 1: Tibby Wagner
  • 2: Liam Reed-Rice
  • 3: Kaitlyn Daut, Lena Dreibelbis, Elaina Foltz, Ethan Wegner
  • 4: Elias Kinne, Ellie Nowell, Noah White
  • 5: Seija Partanen

Way to go, Adams Atoms!

All Belong At Adams

On Thursday, February 29th, Adams’ families and staff gathered to celebrate All Belong at Adams night. This evening, designed to celebrate the diversity of our Adams community, had superb participation with the following countries and cultural groups being represented: the U.K., Columbia, Finland, Canada, China, India, Syria, MENA, Ukraine, Iraq, Turkey, Native American, Bangladesh, Mexico, Pakistan, and Sudan. The evening kicked off with a welcoming performance by the Adams Fifth-Grade Choir. Following that, families shared instruments, artwork, games, articles of clothing, stories, and more representative of their culture. In addition, they brought food items for guests to try. The evening was filled with feelings of pride and the making of meaningful connections. Joy was had by all. Thank you to all who made this wonderful experience possible!

Battle of the Books

Each year, Grace A. Dow Memorial Library promotes Battle of the Books for 4th and 5th grade students. All six Adams teams did an awesome job reading the ten books on the booklist and preparing to answer questions about them in multiple "battles." Adams Elementary was very well represented by our six teams, and we are proud of them all.

Out of almost 50 teams across Midland County, three Adams teams placed in the top 24, and two of our teams made it to the top ten! Congratulations to all the teams on their hard work!

On March 4, the first graders celebrated the 120th day of school with a 120 Days Brighter glow party! By the end of the year, first graders can count, read, and write numbers to 120!

Third Grade Students Welcome French Voyageur, Mr. Randy Baker

Michigan's French Voyageurs played a significant role in the Great Lakes Fur Trading Era. A naturalist, such as Mr. Randy Baker, who dresses up and speaks like a voyageur, helps students experience what life was like for the first Europeans who explored Michigan and the Great Lakes region. He covers the explorations, trade concepts, cultures, and the importance of Michigan's waterways and other natural resources in the development of Michigan.

We thank the Midland Area Youth Action Council for making this experience possible through grant funds.

Margaret Naumburg 1890-1983

Margaret was an artist and psychologist who was coined the phrase “Mother of Art Therapy.” She founded the first Montessori class in 1915. In 1916, she formed her own school known as the Walden School. She stressed in her school the importance of allowing students to explore multitudes of the creative process. From there, she taught several art therapy classes and became an author.

In Mrs. Washabaugh’s class, students used “doodling” as a form of art therapy while listening to music. Art therapy can be done in several ways: music, writing, dance, and visual arts. They learned that the art they did in class was more about the process and not the end result. The project was to give a sense of calmness. Students were taught about value and hue as they doodled around the edges of their watercolor.

Lost and Found

Unclaimed items are donated at the end of each semester.

Students should check the lost and found periodically. We have accumulated many misplaced items such as jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and other personal belongings. Please label your child's belongings to help us quickly return them to their owners.

Community Programs

We want to be sure that our families are aware of the community programs available to those needing assistance. At this time, the following programs are available to Adams students/families:

The Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Backpack Buddies Program is available again this school year. Contact the office at 923-6037 if you would like to receive the food backpack.

Reporting Absences Through ParentVUE

Parents/Guardians can report student(s) absent via ParentVUE. This feature appears as a blue button titled "Report Absences" on the app's main page or website.

  • Parents/guardians can report absences for a single day or multiple days.
  • Report each student individually. Do not enter additional students in the notes section.
  • For each absence reported, parents/guardians must provide a detailed note explaining the reason. If you report your student as sick, please list the symptoms your student is experiencing. The note will help school attendance staff select the correct attendance code.
  • If you have a legal or medical document, please upload it with the absence, or provide it to the school attendance staff upon your student's return. Parents/guardians can still call to report an absence at 989-923-6037.
