Reception Newsletter Summer 1 2025

Welcome to Summer term in Reception!

We hope that you all had an enjoyable and restful Easter break. Last half term was a brilliant term in Reception. The children as ever, showed great enthusiasm for our Animals and Spring topics. The highlight was definitely our fantastic trip to Hall Hill Farm!

We have more exciting and engaging topics this term starting with our Let's Grow! topic.

Let's Grow!

Summer 1 Learning

Communication and Language

We will be following instructions when planting our own seeds. We will be talking about life cycles as well as asking and answering ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. We will also be listening to, engaging in and talking about non-fiction texts.

PSED

We will be working together and talking about how we can build positive and healthy relationships. We will be talking about how it is important to be kind to living creatures and look after our environment.

Physical Development

We will develop our fine motor skills with our funky finger challenges. We will continue to practise forming all of our letters correctly.

In PE, we will be playing games to develop our skills of working co-operatively. We will also be developing our co-ordination skills by practising our throwing and catching this half term. We will continue to use outdoor learning time to continue to develop gross and fine motor skills. Reception PE days for this half term will be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Literacy

This term our topic is ‘Lets grow!’. We will be reading stories including; ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and 'The Tiny Seed'. We will write instructions when planting a magic bean, as well as writing about what we might find at the top of our own imaginary beanstalk. We will continue to read words as well as writing simple sentences, focusing on finger spaces, full stops and capital letters.

Mathematics

We will be building and identifying numbers to 20 and beyond using a range of resources and looking at patterns within the number system. We will explore addition and subtraction further thinking carefully about 'how many now?' . We will also explore shape and develop our spatial reasoning by talking about rotating shapes, looking at different shape arrangements and searching for 2D shapes within 3D shapes.

Understanding the World

We will be planting our own seeds and observing them as they grow in our outdoor area. We will learn about what plants need to grow and survive. We will also be learning about habitats, talking about what they are and how they can be different.

Expressive Arts & Design

We will observe plants and flowers and make detailed drawings and paintings of what we can see, looking at the work of Van Gough’s ‘Sunflowers’. We will be learning about colour mixing and how we can combine different colours to make new ones!

Spring 2 Learning Highlights

Hall Hill Farm

We had a fantastic trip to Hall Hill Farm last half term to consolidate our learning about farming and farm animals. We has such a wonderful day, some highlights were definitely our tractor rides and feeding lambs with a bottle of milk!

Easter Stay and Play

Thank you very much to all parents/carers that were able to attend our stay and play last half term. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Outdoor Learning

In Early Years we use our outdoor area every day as it is such an important part our curriculum. On Wednesday mornings, all of Reception spend the whole morning outside together. As the weather turns warmer, please ensure that sun cream is applied before school. Children should also have a water bottle and a sun hat in school every day.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to get in touch either by catching us on the door at home time or ringing/emailing the school office, who will pass on your queries. Alternatively, leave us a message on Tapestry and we will get back to you.

Many thanks for you ongoing support.

Best Wishes,

Miss Storey and Miss Elvin
