Gunnedah High Newsletter Week 10 ∙ Term 2 ∙ 2024

Principal's Message

This term has been focused on learning and growth. We've also celebrated important events like Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, strengthening our community and cultural understanding. The Boys and Girls Cultural groups are thriving, fostering pride and connection.

Highlights this term included the Clontarf trip to Darwin with the Ampol Redbull race team and our successful Athletics Carnival, showcasing the spirit and talent of our students.

I encourage all students to take advantage of every opportunity that Gunnedah High School offers. Each chance is an opportunity to learn, grow, and excel.

Congratulations to all our award winners at Term 2 Awards Assembly for your exceptional accomplishments. Your dedication has paid off, and you should be very proud.

As we approach the break, I wish everyone a safe, restful, and fun holiday.

All students and staff will return for the start of Term 3 on Monday, July 22.

- Mr Darren Monte, Executive Principal, relieving.

Congratulations to all students for representing our school proudly, and to Miss Winsor and Braith for supporting our students.

NAIDOC Week cooking expedition

On Monday July 1, Gunnedah High School welcomed Sharon Winsor, owner of Indigiearth, a provider of premium bush food. Her products are made from authentic Australian native products that are ethically sourced and sustainably harvested.

Thanks to the Aboriginal Education team, students from the Support Unit were able to attend a session with Sharon and her son, to indulge in various native products such as cinnamon myrtle, freeze-dried finger lime, crocodile, emu and kangaroo meat, and even green ants that tasted just like a warhead lolly! Students had a fantastic time and enjoyed learning, and tasting, something new.

As part of their studies on food preservation and shelf life stability, Year 10 students have been making jam. Miss Popple chose this project because she felt that making jam would be a fun and delicious way for the students to apply all that they have learned.

P&C News

A fun-filled evening of trivia and community!

On Friday, June 28 our P&C held its annual Trivia Night fundraiser. The event began with a welcome from our Vice President, Meleah Walters, followed by an acknowledgment to country by Aunty Kate.

Around 100 people braved the cold to decorate their tables and test their neurons. Everyone enjoyed themselves with fun games and laughs between rounds of trivia.

It was a close battle between a few tables, but after 10 rounds and bonus questions, the night was taken out by ‘Rent a Crowd’. A special mention goes to the wooden spooners ‘UNO’.

Best decorated table went to ‘Smarty Plants’ and the three lucky chair prizes went to Nathan Moore, Donna Austin, and Montana Dries.

Major raffle winners 1st: Lisa Fordham 2nd: Nathan Moore 3rd: Rowena Pryor, and the 100 Clubs won by Lucy Coon and Harrison Hazell.

The night would not have been possible without the hard-working efforts of our P&C members and the support from GHS staff, and the community.

We would also like to thank the following wonderful sponsors:

  • Reverence Sourdough
  • The Verdict
  • Gunnedah Shire Council
  • Gunnedah Newsagency
  • Southgate Inn
  • Carlo’s IGA
  • Mahony Group of Pharmacies

Last, but certainly not least, we send many thanks to Anne McMahon for the excellent variety of trivia questions, and to our master of ceremonies, Ange McCormack, who kept the night running smoothly.

Next P&C meeting: Tuesday 23 July, 6pm in the Library

We invite all parents, carers and community members to attend our P&C meetings. We value and encourage your feedback, so come along and have your say.

Well-being

ReachOut is looking to produce a video for their parents and carers site about how to support teenagers during schooling and exam periods while they are coping with the impacts of a traumatic event.

They'd like to feature the personal story of a parent or carer who has experience with this difficult situation and would be comfortable sharing their reflections and advice. They are particularly keen to feature the story of a parent/carer whose teen was in their senior years of school, completing final exams or assessments, when they experienced trauma.

Example situations could include:

  • a loss of a parent, sibling or close friend or family member
  • a medical diagnosis that disrupted the teen's learning & resulted in trauma
  • a traumatic incident occurring in the teen's personal or school environment.

They'll be aiming to hear how the incident/trauma impacted the teen's life and study, how it impacted the wider family, how the parent/carer supported their teen when it came to balancing study and recovery, and what advice the parent/carer has for other people in similar situations.

The video will be live on their site and potentially shared on social media. This is a paid opportunity.

They are seeking expressions of interest from people all over the country. ReachOut will work closely with the family throughout the entire process, ensuring the story is handled with care and consideration.

If you’re interested, please complete the Expression of Interest form here.

Please contact Monique (Content Producer at RO) for more information — monique.aganovic@reachout.com

If you are in need of support to cope with trauma please visit ReachOut.com or call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Dial 000 in the case of an emergency.
