Creative Literacy Workshops with Declan Carville & EA Amma Centre

Resources for P7 Transition Project

Resource 1: Narrated Story 'Nelly Fandango'

Use the video below, to familiarise your class with the Nelly Fandango story. EA AmmA Centre have worked with Declan to create a narrated video book for classroom use.

Once you have watched the story, you could complete this short online quiz as a class to see how well your pupils can recount the story, and fuel some discussion within your class.

Resource 2: Storyline Development

Using the Story Mountain worksheet from INTO Film's Story Builder resource, Declan outlines how to get start creating your own story inspired by Nelly Fandango and the idea of going through a change, like transitioning to a new school. Watch the video below with your class, and then provide copies of the 'story mountain' worksheet to get started!

Resource 3a: Character Development

Using a modified version of the Character Development worksheet from INTO Film's Story Builder resource, Declan outlines how to get develop your own story characters -- inspired by Nelly Fandango. For the purpose of this activity, pupils should think about their characters in a story context of change or transition. They should loosely base their character around themselves or someone similar to themselves as they go through a transition or a change. Think about emotions, feelings, things they are excited about and things they might be anxious about. Plan their character first, then begin to illustrate it using the 'skeleton/wireframe' on the worksheet as a guide.

Tip: Students should ensure the limbs of the their character drawings are distinct and separate. Do not overlap any part of the limbs or clothing with other limbs. Refrain from drawing anything in the background, focus 100% on the character.

Resource 3b: Character Relationships

An extension to the character development activity outlined above. This activity looks at the key relationships between characters in a story. Consider combining the resources from 3a and 3b, let students work in pairs to design a character each and then consider the relationships between them. Use the change of relationships presented by 'Transition' as a context.

Resource 4: Animate your Character Designs

Using the online animation tool ' Sketch Demo Lab' by Meta, students can very easily photograph their illustrated characters and bringing them to life with a number of easy steps! The animation tool works through the browser and is free. A tablet device with a camera is the easiest approach, but it will work on any device as long as you have access to photos of your work. We've produced an easy to follow video for your students -- let them explore the tool themselves and don't forget to download your animations!
