What is the Idea Lab?

The Idea Lab is a library initiative that supports digital fluency at Humber College.

The Idea Lab offers video, photography, and audio recording studios, as well as fabrication tools such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, and sewing and embroidery machines.

What is a video business card?

A short video to introduce yourself, summarize your experience and tell viewers what you’d like them to know about you.

Pros

  • Video is creative, impactful and engaging
  • Gives viewers an insight into your character and personality
  • Puts your communication and tech skills on display
  • Appearing on camera conveys credibility and authenticity

Cons

  • There's a time constraint; you can't say everything you want to in just 60 seconds
  • It's time consuming to film live action videos
  • May require special equipment (lighting, camera, mics) and software to achieve a professional result (the Idea Lab can help with this!)
  • Appearing on camera may open you up to discrimination, implicit bias related to your gender, ethnicity, or physical appearance

What is an Animated Video?

  • Animated videos are comprised of images, icons and text
  • They can also include voice over narration and music, but typically do not include any live action footage

Creating an Animated Video

Before you begin..

Craft your message; narrow down what you want to communicate about yourself

Decide on the tone of your video (funny, serious, lighthearted, friendly, professional, etc.)

Identify what audio-visual content you will need to communicate your message. What do you need to create? What do you need to source from elsewhere?

Write a Script and/or Storyboard

What is Adobe Express?

Adobe Express, formerly called Adobe Spark, is an online application that can help you quickly put together a professional looking animated video (as well as other content) by adding in images, text, narration, video clips and music

Access from a web browser or mobile app

Beginner and "non-designer" friendly

There is a free version, which limits the number of templates stock images and fonts you can access but is otherwise very powerful.

Use the available Adobe stock assets (photos, video footage, music) and/or import your own, created by you or sourced from elsewhere, e.g., Creative Commons.
