Open Morning

We welcomed prospective families into school this week for a fantastic and busy Open Morning. Thank you to our student tour guides and all of our students in lessons who truly are the best ambassadors of the school. Thanks also to the choir who gave an amazing performance and our Head Girl Team, who spoke confidently and articulately about their experiences of KC.

National Careers Week

Year 7

Head of Careers, Mrs Oogarah delivered the first session of the "Lean In Girls" Leadership Programme to our Year 7 students yesterday as part of National Careers Week. The nationwide programme helps girls see themselves as future leaders and equips them to be self-assured, resilient, and inspires them to lead boldly. It will run for the next six weeks and we look forward to seeing how the next sessions go!

Year 8

On Thursday we were joined by a facilitator from Everfi, an educational platform provider of school workshops. They delivered a wonderful workshop combining careers and STEM, enabling students to think about their transferable skills, strengths and an opportunity to try out tech based careers to our Year 8 students.

Sixth Form

The Sixth Form Futures Talk this week came from the Swiss Education Group who provide degrees and training in Hospitality, Business and Culinary Arts, ranking high for the best providers of this type worldwide. We had a fascinating insight into their programmes as well as hearing key facts about their 97% employment rate after graduation and 90% in management positions within five years - impressive statistics!

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day on Thursday and it was fantastic to see so many of our staff and students dressed up as their favourite characters from literature! The costumes were fantastic! We also held a second hand library book stall and all the money raised will be going to World Book Day and our school charities.

Other students also wrote their favourite book quotes and decorated classroom doors!

Air Hockey

7 Brunyate held the heats for the tutor group air hockey championship this week. After eight fierce play offs, we soon ended up with our semi-final heats, where Eleanor beat Imi, and Sage beat Lottie. So, it was an Eleanor verses Sage final, and with a final score of 9-7, Sage took the crown on Wednesday.

International Study Centre

In line with International Women's Day, the ISC students have been taking part in an international project.

Year 11 EAL students Hermione, Jaslyn, Chloe, Yuhan, and Tina presented speeches on global topics to students in Poland via Zoom. Topics included Fast Fashion, Equality in Sport, Inequality in Globalisation and The Green Belt and the Polish students presented back to them on other topics relevant to them.

Here is what some of the students thought:

The experience was very memorable. I found it interesting how we shared different opinions and asked lots of perceptive questions about our speeches. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and have learnt a lot from them. Tina, Year 11
It was really interesting to talk with the students from the Polish school. It was a unique experience and a good opportunity to practise my speech before the oral exam. Yuhan, Year 11

Pinewood Studios Trip

On Friday, Film students visited Pinewood Studios for ‘Futures Festival’, one of the biggest careers events for those looking to start a career in the creative sector. Pinewood Studios has been the hub of film and TV production in the UK for over 85 years, producing some of the biggest blockbuster films including popular franchises such as James Bond and Star Wars. It is usually closed to the general public so students enjoyed a rare opportunity to look behind the scenes.

Students were given a tour of some of Pinewood Studio’s impressive soundstages where they were able to meet potential employers and take part in a number of fun demonstrations using state-of-the-art filmmaking equipment. They even encountered a few famous faces from film and TV!

The day concluded with an inspiring panel discussion run by the British Film Commission where industry professionals gave invaluable advice on how to start a career in the creative sector.

Here’s what Grace (Lower Sixth) had to say about the experience:

For someone like me, an extremely creative person who has been told that a career in the film industry is unrealistic and unreachable, this event was an eye opener and made me believe that if I want a career in film, there is no reason why I can’t make it a reality. From all the amazing characters (which was a dream come true for me) to the super helpful information stands and really friendly staff, this day was so amazing. It gave a film enthusiast like me something to strive towards.

Science Club

This week in Science Club, our students made their own indicator using red cabbage and tested it against various solutions of different pHs. They were amazed at the range of colours that can be formed from a simple dye from the trusty red cabbage. Lots of fun was had with rainbows galore!
