Summary
The Brand
HITCHHIKER knows that the best stories are never planned. They live in missed connections, shared beers with strangers, wrong turns that lead somewhere better, and the kind of places you only find when you stop trying to be found. We’re lovers of dusty roads, plastic chairs, late-night conversations, and the feeling of belonging somewhere you can’t quite explain. Hitchhiker was created to capture those moments and share them with travelers who crave real connection over curated comfort. Why? Because the only thing better than going somewhere new is being changed by it. Our Vision is simple: to document the world as it’s actually lived. Not through luxury resorts or safe itineraries, but through the streets, kitchens, dance floors, and coastlines where real life happens. Hitchhiker exists for travelers who measure richness in experience, not amenities. We publish indie travel stories rooted in backpacking culture, slow travel, local perspectives, and human connection. Each issue features long-form narratives, off-the-beaten-path destinations, cultural deep-dives, and real recommendations from people who live there. Our Target Market is the global traveler who values authenticity over aesthetics. Curious, creative, open-minded, and experience-driven. They choose hostels over hotels, street food over room service, and conversations over content. Travel is not an escape for them. It is a way of life. Our Promise is real. No filters. No fantasy. Just the long way in, the honest story, and the kind of travel that stays with you long after you leavet
Type Trials
Belwe was chosen for the cover title and headlines for its bold, expressive character and vintage editorial feel. Its slightly irregular serifs bring personality and warmth, aligning with Hitchhiker’s raw, human approach to travel storytelling. Belwe feels grounded and confident without feeling polished or corporate, which reflects the magazine’s indie ethos. Alegreya was selected for body text for its excellent readability and literary tone. Designed specifically for long-form reading, it supports the magazine’s narrative-driven content and immersive storytelling. Its softer rhythm and warmth pair naturally with Belwe’s strength, creating a visual balance between impact and intimacy that mirrors Hitchhiker’s blend of adventure and reflection

Reflection
I had a lot of fun working on this project and have genuinely found a love for editorial design and using InDesign as a whole, which I never thought would happen before this class - thanks to you, Judy! What started as a challenging program to learn has slowly become one of my favourite creative tools. Building Hitchhiker felt half like an assignment and half like creating a real zine-esque publication from the ground up, which made the entire process exciting and motivating. After completing Project 3, I felt significantly more confident in my InDesign skills going into Project 4. That foundation made a noticeable difference in how efficiently and intentionally I worked. I was able to focus less on technical problem-solving and more on refining hierarchy, pacing, grid structure, and typographic contrast, which allowed me to trust my design decisions and push the creative further. My greatest challenge was time management. Balancing this large-scale project alongside other classes made the process intense at times. This project took a lot of effort, and I found it difficult to balance learning how to properly use InDesign’s tools while also trying to create something I was genuinely happy with creatively. Managing long-form editorial layouts across multiple articles while maintaining consistency and visual interest added another layer of challenge. My greatest success was creating a cohesive and somewhat believable magazine brand. From the editor’s note to the feature articles and packing guide, everything feels aligned with the Hitchhiker identity. The typography system, photography, and writing all work together to communicate a clear point of view. After printing, I would revisit a few spacing and margin decisions, particularly where text feels slightly dense in longer articles. I would also make minor refinements to image placement to improve flow across spreads. I absolutely consider this a portfolio piece. It demonstrates branding, editorial layout, typography, and art direction in a way that aligns with my long-term career goals. To further improve it, (besides going back and making lots of tweaks) I would expand the concept into a second issue or digital adaptation to show how the brand could evolve across platforms.
