KC News Round Up Friday 11th October 2024

Harvest Festival

This week we celebrated Harvest Festival with a whole school assembly and donations to the local foodbank. Each House was tasked with bringing in different items and the House who brought in the most items received House points. The winning House was Danes but thanks to everyone for your generosity.

Open Events

This week, Kent College Senior School has held two busy recruitment events. Firstly the Senior School Open Morning, which took place on Saturday and secondly the Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday. Both were fantastic events, with lots of prospective families interested in joining Kent College. Our students were brilliant ambassadors for Kent College, both in the classroom activities along the tour route, as tour guides on Open Morning and as subject prefects at the Sixth Form Information Evening - thank you all for helping make these events so successful.

Exciting News in Prep!

In a slight change to Kent College Prep's year by year phased approach to transition to a fully co-educational school by 2027, boys will now be welcome to join all year groups from Nursery to Year 6 from September 2025. This means from next September, Kent College Prep will be a fully co-ed school.

Boarding Activities

Our boarders have had a brilliant week with a trip to Dino Golf, where they played some highly competitive footgolf along with a round of crazy golf. They have also done some baking in house, had a spa evening and enjoyed some campfire fun, toasting marshmallows.

Digital Workshops

This week we had a visit from Collaborate Digital and Matthew Scott, the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, who delivered assemblies and workshops to educate our students on how to maintain a healthy online life while avoiding potential threats and dangers. The morning covered healthy relationships, online harms and cyber safety, highlighting the consequences for young people, their friends and family.

Girls on Board

This week we introduced a new initiative to Years 7 and 8, called Girls on Board, an effective approach designed to help girls navigate friendship challenges. The aim of Girls on Board is to empower students to find their own solutions to the friendship issues which are a natural part of teenage life and minimise the distress they might experience, as well as reducing the need for parents and teachers to become involved. Over the coming weeks this will also be rolled out to all students in Years 9 - 11 too.

Year 7 Science

In Year 7 Science this week, 7C had to model solid, liquid and gas from blocks. They ‘broke’ their surface by spilling yellow ‘lemonade’, making the screen ‘smoke’ and included a solid ‘mouse’ next door!

GCSE Astronomy

In conjunction with our ISSP partner schools The Skinners’ School and The Judd School, A-level Physics and GCSE Astronomy students were invited to a talk at Skinners last night to hear a talk from Mike Lockwood, the new President of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Mike Lockwood grew up in Tunbridge Wells and has worked in some amazing places like Svalbard. He talked about the facilities that are used to study the interaction between the Sun and the Earth as revealed by disturbances in the ionosphere and magnetosphere.

Year 8 Trip to Matilda

On Wednesday evening, Year 8 enjoyed a fantastic trip to see Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre in London's West End. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this amazing show!

Halloween Bake Sale

On Friday we had a fantastic Halloween Bake Sale and cake competition. The judges chose the spookiest and scariest creation, before the cakes were sold at break time, with all proceeds split across the Kent College charities.
