Green Citizens tefat green curriculum resources

Our pupils will be the ones who steward the planet into the future. This strand is focused around how we can take personal responsibility for our place in the world. Here you will find resources linked to this strand and to links across the curriculum.

Curriculum Ideas:

  • Our Planet
  • Our Body
  • Our Food

Resource: At Shirestone the DT curriculum was linked to learning about looking after the environment and sustainability. Each year group learnt about nutrition, seasonality and how food is produced in different ways. This learning got students working together and discovering how as Green Citizens, our choices with regard to the food we eat can have an impact not just on ourselves but on our world.

Resource: Making a difference is a key value of TEFAT. As a Trust we believe that making the world a better place starts with you and there are a wealth of community action projects happening across our schools. At Greenside they showcase this every Friday at the Community Food Share. The school receives a weekly delivery of surplus produce from The Felix Project and from their food suppliers. Families are also encouraged to donate any food items they have that might be going spare. These are laid out in the playground each Friday by a group of pupils for everyone to share. Rather than working as a traditional food bank concept, this is open to everyone and helps to remove the stigma of food poverty.

Resource: During an RE lesson, teachers at Greenside used food as a way of deepening the pupils' understanding of Sikhism. They did this by recreating the community kitchen, or Langar, found in every Gurdwara. The pupils were able to make a vegetarian meal which they served to the whole school for lunch that day. This session combined learning about food with the RE curriculum to create a purposeful learning experience that benefited the whole school community.

Resource: At George Betts pupils have working on a food waste project. Pupils are developing their citizenship skills by working together at lunch to separate the food waste into separate bags and disposing of it in a separate bin to the general waste. This reduces the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. The food waste that is collected will be used to create clean renewable energy and be pasteurised to be used in local farming as an organic fertiliser. They also had the chance to explore a range of electric vehicles courtesy of Mini. The pupils learned about the positive changes we can make as citizens to improve the environment for all of us.
