A Message from WESD Superintendent Dr. Paul Stanton

Greetings WESD Families and Staff,

The holiday season is here, and I want to take a moment to thank our incredible teachers, administrators, support staff and community members for their ongoing support of our students. I also want to thank all of our parents, guardians and families for the continued support they show to the district each and every day. It truly does take a village, and I am so grateful for all of you who make up our WESD Family.

As an early reminder, winter break will be from Monday, December 25th through Monday, January 8th. Students’ last day of school before the break is Friday, December 22nd, which is an early release day. The first day back for students after the break is Tuesday, January 9th, 2024. Please plan accordingly.

In this update, you will read about our upcoming Kindergarten Open House events, reminders about our website redesign survey and tax credit opportunity, an update from our Climate and Culture Committee, and a recent award from the Arizona School Administrators.

WESD to Host Kindergarten Open House Events on January 18th

Calling all families of future kindergarten students! Do not miss our upcoming Kindergarten Open Houses! Offered at 27 locations, our schools will be hosting their annual events on Thursday, January 18th, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you and your child to learn about WESD’s kindergarten program, meet teachers, explore classrooms, and receive important information about our KidSpace childcare program, transportation services and school meals. We are so excited to meet our future students! To learn more about kindergarten enrollment, please call 602-896-6950 or click here.

Take Our Website Redesign Survey

The WESD is still seeking feedback on its district and school web pages. Your feedback is critical in helping us refresh our websites and improve our online presence and the user experience. If you have not already done so, please click here to take a brief survey and answer a few short questions. We are thankful for your input and support!

Climate and Culture Committee Provides Update

As previously communicated, we will be sharing updates from our district committees to keep you informed of our goals and work throughout the school year. Today’s update comes from the Climate and Culture Committee. This team actively works to meet the Governing Board and WESD Goals of providing a safe, secure, and healthy learning and working environment for all, which raises all students’ achievement while building stronger family and community engagement. The committee’s goals for the 2023-2024 school year will be to:

• increase our daily attendance rate by 2 percent,

• decrease our chronic absenteeism rate by 8 percent,

• reduce the overall number of suspensions, including ISS and OSS by 10 percent, and

• decrease the number of DDN (disrespect, defiance, non-compliance) incidents by 3 percent.

Support Our Students with a Tax Credit Donation

During this season of giving, please consider making a tax credit donation to a WESD school. Your donation provides WESD students with the opportunity to succeed in extracurricular activities and funds items such as uniform replacements, equipment, stipends for coaches and sponsors. By making a tax credit donation, you will also receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your state income taxes. To help enhance the life of a child and make a tax credit donation today, please click here. The WESD appreciates your support!

Dr. Stanton Recognized with All Arizona Superintendent Award

I recently was awarded the All Arizona Superintendent Award for large districts by the Arizona School Administrators at the ASBA/ASA Annual Winter Conference. The All Arizona Superintendent Awards recognize leaders in small, medium and large districts who exemplify the standards for educational excellence and serve students, staff, families and their community. To qualify, administrators must demonstrate outstanding leadership in curriculum and instruction, management of student activities, professional involvement, relations with the Board, public, and community, and more. It is an honor to serve the WESD and I wish to thank each of you for allowing me to participate in the education of your children.
