Little Life Cycles

nURSERY, SPRING TERM, WEEK 9

This week has been full of tiny wonders in our nursery! We were very excited to discover some frogspawn in our pond, and the children have been fascinated watching it change day by day. Some of the little jelly-like eggs have already wriggled into tadpoles, which has sparked lots of curious conversations. It’s been a lovely way to explore how living things grow and change – just like our children, who are growing into capable little learners right before our eyes.

Making notes and recording questions (mark making).
Careful observation.

For Science Week, the children were set an important challenge. We imagined that the pond our frogspawn came from had become polluted — oh no! Knowing that all living things need clean water, the children got busy being little scientists. Using funnels and filter paper, they carefully filtered the dirty water until it was clean again. They were delighted to give the fresh water to the tadpoles, feeling very proud to have helped their tiny pond friends!

Superb teamwork

Maths has been popping up everywhere in our play this week too. We’ve been counting quantities using fun, familiar things like snacks (always a popular activity!), spotting numbers around the environment, and singing lots of lively number songs – including some very fitting frog-themed ones.

Alongside all of this, the children have been busy with lots of playful activities that help build the important skills needed for writing later on. There’s been plenty of spraying with water bottles, jumping and catching bubbles, and exploring different ways to make marks with a variety of materials. It might look like simple play, but these fun movements are strengthening little hands, arms and coordination – all important steps on the journey towards writing.

As always, it’s been a joyful week together. From watching our tiny tadpoles change day by day, to building strong bodies and curious minds through play, the children are learning that growing happens in lots of different ways. We can’t wait to see what our tadpoles grow into next!
