Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.
And just like that - boom, we're into January. You know what I'm going to say - it's like we were never away. There's been a quiet air of 'back to business' this week, and I for one am very glad to be back to a routine.
Mrs Porter did a lively assembly today about how the Feast of the Epiphany, or Día de los Reyes, is celebrated in Spain. On this day, families gather together and cut into a sweet treat called Roscón de Reyes - a circular cake filled with cream. If you slice into it and get a figurine of a king - you are a king or queen for the day. If however, you get a bean, you have to pay for the cake. She certainly had our attention! Her description of what awaited the king or queen for the day had me wishing I could introduce such a tradition here. Imagine, no making my own lunch, no doing my own housework, no clearing up after everyone else on one day of the year....
Enjoy the weekend.
Mrs Rich

Pizza lunch for Johnson - well done everyone!
The smell of delicious pizza wafted through the Geography Room this lunchtime, as Johnson House members tucked into a slice of victory. As a reward for winning the most house points last term they were served the tasty treat. Classic margherita was the top choice, with pepperoni a close second. We did feel a little sorry for Mr McGregor's geography class this afternoon though- if you weren't in Johnson House and hadn't filled your tummy, it probably wasn't the sweetest smelling lesson.....
Mr Brinkmanis leaves his mark - he's just so extra!
We wanted to show you the lovely leaving present Mr Brinkmanis left us when he finished his time at Canbury school last term. Mrs Rich was thrilled to accept these beautiful paintings which he did, depicting the Canbury deer. We're sure you'll agree, they do brighten up the Hall.
With the departure of Mr Brinkmanis for sunnier climes, Mrs Tank, our new art teacher, has big shoes to fill. But she's taking it in her stride and here she shares with us some of what's been going on in the Canbury Art Studio in this, our first week back from Christmas.
"Year 11 Art and Photography students have kicked off the week with further preparation for their GCSE exams. We wish you all the best. Year 8 started their project on 3D insects and discovered some interesting species from around the world that sparked lots of discussion. Year 7 have been continuing their graphics project on climate change and explored designing their own lettering for catchy slogans for their posters. Year 10 photography students explored the theme of ‘abstract and strange’ defining the meanings of these words in its broader context and discussing the human sculptures of Erwin Wurm. It has been a lovely week beginning to getting to know all the students and I’m really excited to teach at Canbury!"
Are we ready for Senora Porter and her Spanish House Event?
Senora Porter has been whipping up support this week ahead of the first House Event of the new year. Wednesday 22 January will see us trying to outwit each other in a Spanish 'Blooket' competition where the questions will be coming thick and fast on screen, whilst competitors will be simultaneously playing an online game. Mrs Porter was trying to explain the rules to Mrs Bate, but between the two of them there was just an awful lot of laughing and not much understanding going on. Never mind, the House Captains (Lysander, Kit and Matt) have been tasked with producing a poster and recruiting competitiors. So expect for them to jolly you along to take part. HP for all those taking part (with extra available if you can incorporate your House colour into your school uniform that day - without going OTT: think a hair clip, an ear-ring, laces in your shoes, a sock). We think you get the picture. See you in the Spanish Room at 1pm. All welcome, whether or not you study and/or speak Spanish.
It's cold out there - but Spring IS coming!
It's been a funny old week back at school. After the excitement of Christmas we all had to pull on our positive pants and get back into the swing of things. Front desk Mrs Davies (not LSA Mrs Davies) brought some lillies to cheer us all up. Mr Fairbrass, dressed in a wooly winter hat and summer shorts (figure that one out) got to work in the playground, cutting back foliage and keeping everything in order for us. Three cheers for us all - it's always hard coming back to school after a break, but now we all have another two days to chill!
