Empathize

Who are they?

Every year, in our university, many materials could be recycled, such as plastic bottles, paper and other materials that go to waste without being recycled the proper way. Many university students, because they don’t have direct access to dustbins, most of the time they don’t make the effort to find the closest one on campus, and they either leave the trash on the table or throw it to the ground. In most cases, the students lack knowledge and awareness about irresponsible waste and its impact on our quality of life and future generations. This lifestyle originated from the lack of awareness about environmental issues and the importance of our contribution towards a better future.

Define

The main problem that we found at our university campus is the lack of recycling bins and trash cans. This is a huge problem, not only for the University community but also for the environment. The effect of this enormous problem is the pollution of the university environment. To define the problem, we spent some time gathering information about the recycling bins that are nowhere to be found, and we discovered the following problems. First, there are nowhere near enough recycling bins. Also, recycling rates can be affected by the locations where the recycling bins are placed. Also, it is a typical problem for bins to be contaminated by non-recyclable waste. Sometimes people can unintentionally place trash in recycling bins, which would result in contamination and higher processing costs. Finally, some older University buildings might lack the infrastructure required to support successful recycling programmes, such as insufficient room for recycling bins or out-of-date trash disposal methods.

All the ideas

  • E-waste recycling kiosks: drop off their old electronic devices for recycling
  • Multi -Purpose bin PMD, Paper, Waste, Ashtray
  • Transparent bins to make sure users can see the impact of their actions
  • Smart recycle bins
  • Recycling incentive programs: governments & organisations can implement
  • Incestive programs that reward individuals for recycling milestones
  • Recycling eduu apps
  • Posters, Awareness campaign
  • Education of students about correct recycling process
  • Recycling baskets combined with a game (like basketball)
  • Inside the university logo, there will be a large structure where plastic will be recycled
  • Baskets where every time you throw trash, it drops cat/dog food
  • Recycling baskets that will be created by hand from recycled plastic or paper. Creating events where the way the baskets were made will be explained
  • Stickers around the recycle bin that shows difference kind of games. That makes students more interactive with the recycling

Final Idea

We concluded that we would undertake a campaign to raise awareness about the lack of recycling bins at our university. First, our team will gather signatures from professors and students, to be forwarded to the management of our university, about the need for recycling bins in all teaching areas. We will also display our recycle bin concept/idea so that the management can have creative inspiration on how to approach recycling and promote it on campus. Our recycle bins will be interactive for the students, with the slogan " don't be shy, put some more".
