Catherine (Cat) Tang serving my community and equalizing access to information

Hi! My name is Cat.

I am currently a Library Assistant at the Covina Public Library and a Library Aide at the Whittier Public Library. I have worked in public librarianship since June 2022.

Here is a look at some of my work!

I've led LEGO Build programs for ages 5 to 12...

... taught a teen origami class in the library makerspace...

... and gone on outreach visits to local schools and parks,

where we provided mobile library services (including book check-outs and library card registration), storytimes, crafts, and recreation activities!

I am also a student at San José State University (SJSU), where I am 6 units away from completing my Master's in Library and Information Science.

I joined the American Library Association Student Chapter (ALASC) here at SJSU as soon as I began the program and have spent the past few years moving my way through the organization:

  • Social Media/Events Assistant (summer - fall 2023)
  • Events Coordinator (2024)
  • Chair (present)

I am incredibly proud to be part of this organization, as we have been honored with ALA's Student Chapter of the Year Award (SCOTYA) in both 2024 and 2025!

I am pleased to inform you that San Jose State University-School of Information has been selected for the 2025 Student Chapter of the Year Award. Each year the Student Chapter of the Year Award Committee selects those student chapters who exemplify our values of excellence, service and compliance while performing at a consistently high level, making a difference in the lives of their students. Congratulations on your recognition! -Dr. Michelle Osborne, ALA Student Chapter of the Year Award Committee

My involvement in SJSU's ALASC has provided me with many opportunities for professional growth.

At the ALA Annual Conference in June 2024, I co-presented a poster on ALASC’s organizational preservation strategies during the “The Educators” national poster session, speaking to an audience of library & information science professionals from across the country!

The poster presentation gave my fellow officers and I the chance to talk about strategies we've developed to ensure the SJSU ALASC's long-term health and growth, as well as why we are so passionate about the organization.

I went on to present the poster again in October 2024, at the SJSU School of Information's Networking Reception at the California Library Association Annual Conference in Pasadena, CA.

As the ALASC Events Coordinator, I have hosted many events!

The ALASC Events team planned a total of 9 events total during the 2024 spring and fall semester. All of these events were held virtually via Zoom and many are available for viewing on the SJSU ALASC YouTube channel.

We had a great turnout to these events, with an average of 62 registrants and 20 attendees.

My most popular event was the fall 2024 Around the World Library Tour, which featured 2018-2019 ALA Past-President Loida Garcia-Febo, and had a total of 150 registrants and 37 live attendees!

This year, I also had the honor of speaking to the 2026-2027 ALA Presidential Candidates.

Curious about what other skills I have?

Watch me present a sample storytime!

Take a look at a 12-month programming plan I've created!

I'm also skilled at providing digital instruction:

I've created content instructing students how to use the Gale Opposing Viewpoints database for research...

... and I've created a LibGuide on how to navigate my library's catalog.

Thank you for visiting my visual portfolio!

I would love to bring my skills to your team.
