Star Board Term One Week Ten

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Koutou

In my Thursday morning Ata Mārie I invited applications for the vacant prefect role which holds the Boarding portfolio. Those wishing to apply should contact Miss Watt for an application form. This person will be appointed and commissioned at the start of term two.

The process for appointment will be adjusted to work to the available timelines. Applications must be in by Wednesday 10 April.

There will be a voting process which will involve Boarding seniors, Staff from St Matthew’s and Senior College. Voting will need to be completed by the Monday of the first week of the holidays.

We wish our potential candidates well.

St Matthew’s Collegiate Sport

St Matthew’s can boast exemplary participation in sport. It felt timely to give reminders as we embark on the terms two and three sports season. This will look familiar as the Sports department made this available at the start of the year.

Sport is compulsory at St Matthew's Collegiate and students are to participate in a minimum of one sport within the year. The option is to play a summer sport for both Terms 1 and 4, or a Winter sport for Terms 2 & 3. There are a couple of codes which cross seasons such as Equestrian. The expectation is that each student will commit to a minimum of one code and attend both trainings and games for the entire season. Students may wish to play sport throughout the year if desired, as long as they can honour their commitments to the codes they sign up for.

Before confirming your sport for the year please consider the following facts:

  • If a student signs up for a sport they will be registered and charged the fee (which St Matthew's Collegiate is charged when registering the team/players). If a student withdraws from a team the fee will still stand.
  • If a student cannot attend team trainings or games due to other commitments, they are not to sign up — they are letting other team members down. If a student signs up but fails to turn up to two consecutive trainings or game without good reason they will be removed from the team. Please understand this does not exempt students from our compulsory sport rule — each student is expected to honour the commitment of one sport within the year. It is to be a 100% commitment to the code/s they chose- nothing less.
  • The school has the right to make changes to teams/move students between teams for any of the following reasons — incorrect selection/not the right level, behavioural issues, lack of commitment.
  • If a student cannot participate in sport — either for a short or long period of time — a medical certificate is required.
  • If any student is concussed at any stage concussion clearance from a medical practitioner is required before they are to return to any SMS sport or physical activity.
  • Exemptions from our compulsory sport rule is granted by the Principal and we ask you do this before the school year commences.
  • Students are to play for St Matthew’s Collegiate for any sport offered. If a student wishes to play for club instead of or in addition to school then dispensation and permission is required — each sport has a process. Please see the Sport Department if applicable. The general rule is you play for school if the sport is offered. And if a student is given dispensation to play for a club in addition to school the school team commitment is a priority at all times.
  • Sports alerts and notices are made via the school ap. Please ensure both yourself and your daughter has the app. You will miss very important information if you are not viewing these alerts.
  • The Sport sheet comes out weekly which outlines trainings and games — there may be times we do not have the draw in time for the Sport sheet in which case we suggest you check the website of the competition for the draw, or touch base with the coach or manager of the team. This comes out on the school app and the newsletter.

I thank our students, staff, and parents who will play, coach, manage, and referee our winter sports teams.

Have a great and safe weekend.

Boarding Note

It was all smiles from this group of Year 7-9 boarders on Wednesday morning. Not only had they enjoyed the extended Easter break at home, but they were also excited about the short week ahead. The fact that they had just run over to pick up their morning tea was another reason to be smiling!

A few notices for the final week of the term 1-

  • All girls must clear out their rooms and get them checked off before leaving for the holidays.
  • There is a Boarders Dinner on the last Thursday of each term. If your daughter is a part timer who does not usually board on a Thursday, but she would like to attend the dinner please email jo.booth@trinityschools.nz about either staying an extra night in Week 11 or switching nights as a one off for this important boarding event.
  • Please complete your Orah passes when your daughter is last in boarding until Sunday 28th April when all boarders (Full and Part Time) are due back between 3-5pm.
  • Following on from our boarding survey that went out to boarding families last year, a suggestion was to have a meeting to discuss catering for boarders. If you are interested to learn more about this, please feel free to join me at 4.30pm on the 28th April in the Dining Room.

We look forward to a happy and productive final week to the term.

Easter Retreat

AYM (Anglican Youth Ministry) Easter Retreat at El Rancho this year was a blast! Over 250 students from all over the Wellington Diocese came together to celebrate the Easter Story and to have an epic time. The fun and games started as soon as we arrived where we all found out that we had been coopted into our very own nation – Namanamastoko, and that part of our weekend challenge was to win the Olympic Games, which we came pretty close to doing. Highlights were Top Town, taking out the whole podium for Mini Golf, the band, the Connect 4 championship, and Brooke’s birthday ‘cake’. Although not a lot of sleep was had, an exhausted yet happy crew made their way back to St Matthew’s on Monday. What a fabulous time!

Riding for the Disabled Jubilee Lunch

Last week four of our Year 10 girls were helpers at the Riding for the Disabled Jubilee Lunch. Pictured here with Mrs Sue Dalziell are Grace Johnson, Brianna Benkie, Simone Kittow, and Phoebe Goodman. It was a great experience for the girls to be involved in this community event.
