I am writing to you all to provide you with an update on something called Martyn’s Law.
On 2 May 2023, the Government published the draft Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as Martyn’s Law, for pre-legislative scrutiny by the Home Affairs Select Committee. The Bill imposes requirements on premises and events, including schools, to increase their preparedness for, and protection from, a terrorist attack. The legislation will ensure responsible persons are prepared, ready to respond and know what to do in the event of an attack. Better protection will be delivered through enhanced security systems, staff training, and clearer processes. Our school will align with the relevant risk assessment and security plan, considered to a ‘reasonably practicable’ standard to keep learners safe. Governors have recently approved our updated lockdown procedure that has been written with support from the LA Health & Safety team.
Please be assured that the school has not received any threats and we are not aware of any perceived threats. However, having had a fire drill today, next week we will be practising lock down procedures with all children and staff in school. This will ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a lock down. Whilst the chance of going into lock down remains extremely low, it is imperative that the children are prepared.
Please accept this letter as notice that we will be practising our lockdown procedures over the coming weeks. When this happens, there will be no access to the school site as all external gates will be locked.
