BOOK WEEK PARADE This week started off wonderfully with a whole school Book Week Parade in the gymnasium on Monday. There were some wonderful costumes on display, with plenty of Wiggles, Minions, Wallys, dinosaurs and more. We were then lucky enough to have a visiting author, Coral Vass, share her wisdom and advice with our students in various workshops on Tuesday. Thank you to everyone for participating in this wonderful whole school event, and special thanks to the Book week ‘Team’, Annabell Dransfield and Zoe Sakellaris for their planning and implementation and our school captains for compering the parade. It was lots of fun!!

SWIMMING Our Grade Foundation to 2 swimming program kicked off today at the Yarra Swim School in Greensborough. Our students will participate in five consecutive weeks of lessons, with older students participating in a water safety program towards the end of the school year.

UPCOMING EVENTS We are already past the halfway mark of the term, and spring (believe it or not!) is less than two weeks away. Another highlight of the Foundation to Grade 2 school year is their cross country event which is set down for Wednesday, August 27 on the school oval. Always a fun day and we hope you can find the time to attend and cheer your children on. Among other events, we have an upcoming Father’s Day stall, Grade 3 and 4 Hoop Time, a Grade 6 Urban Camp, a Foundation Edendale Farm excursion and as mentioned previously the State Schools Spectacular on September 13. Something for everyone!

PARENT OPINION SURVEY You should have received a link via email on Monday to a Parent Opinion Survey which we would love for you to complete at your leisure. Whether you love everything we do, or you have a range of improvement ideas or comments, please complete the survey if you can.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

LOST PROPERTY We are midway through term 3 and the amount of lost property is constantly growing. We regularly have a couple of volunteers who try to return named jumpers but the lost property tub always seems to be overflowing.

To assist us, please name your child’s clothing and remind them to put their jumpers in their bag or tie them around their waist if they take them off when outside.

If you are looking for lost jumpers, please check your child’s classroom, the gym foyer and the purple lost property tub near the music room.

Unfortunately, many jumpers are being left on the oval, the tiger turf or around the playgrounds after playtime each day. With the damp evenings and/or wet nights these jumpers are always damp the next morning and cannot be worn.

Please remind your child to check that they have their jumper each afternoon as they pack their bag.

Have a great week.

DANGEROUS DRIVING We can continue to be informed of ‘near misses’ of students and families as they cross roads. The below image shows where Banyule Council Crossing Supervisors are located (a green line); on Martins Lane between Wintson Road and Castelton Road, On Winston Road opposite the gym, and on Lascelles Avenue opposite the entry/exit ramp.

The image also shows where we have been informed (in some cases seen for ourselves) some very near misses where our students – your children – have almost been hit by cars. Sometimes the issue has been the students not being car aware, and we thank the parents and community members who have been paying attention enough where they have been able to stop their car in time. However, with the increase in traffic in the area due to North-East Link works, some near misses have been the fault of impatient drivers.

Recent ‘hotspot areas’ (marked with a red box) have included the corner of Grantham Road and Lower Plenty Road; and the corner of Winston Road and Toumlin Grove. We also have regular reports of families almost being hit by cars on the corner of Lascelles Avenue and Nevin Parade, Danson Street and Winston Road, and the corner of Winston Road and Martins Lane (where students and families walk directly to the shops from Winston Road instead of walking to the Crossing Supervisor. We know that sometimes students and families are not taking care in their surrounds, but more often than not, it is cars that are rushing and / or not paying attention.

This is something I wrote about almost 12 months ago:

None of us ever want to receive a phone call that our child has been struck by a car while they have crossed a road at the correct spot, due to driver error. There is a well-known saying in the motorcycle and cycling community after some types of accidents – a SMIDSY event. That is, ‘Sorry Mate, I Didn’t See You’ (of course, 2-wheel riders can be guilty of this too). This occurs primarily because the, in our circumstance, driver of a car is focused on other cars or on looking for their own child only. An extremely useful 1-minute video (from the UK, Transport for London Department) that I strongly encourage you to look at that demonstrates this concept can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNSgmm9FX2s

We have also had a lot of complaints regards parking in drop off / pick up zones around the school. People who park in the parking bay along Winston Road are not allowed to leave their cars to walk children in or out of school. The definition for each sign is in the second image below.

You can find all VicRoads regulations regarding parking here: https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/road-rules-and-safety/parking and parking signs here: https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/road-rules-and-safety/road-signs

From the website Drivers sharing the road with pedestrians https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/road-rules-and-safety/drivers-sharing-the-road-with-pedestrians

Fines and demerit points are applicable for those that do not obey these rules.

Have a great weekend,

Patrick

Volunteer OHS – Keeping Everyone Safe We greatly value the time and support our volunteers bring to our school. To ensure the safety of students, staff, and volunteers, we follow the Department of Education’s Volunteer Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Policy.

For the remainder of 2025, all volunteers are required to:

This process outlines your tasks, school safety procedures, emergency exits, first aid information, and how to report hazards or incidents.

Inductions are valid for 12 months and a new one will be required for 2026. Even if you’ve volunteered before, you may need to refresh your induction.

All volunteers must sign in at the office, wear a visitor pass, and follow staff instructions. If you notice something unsafe, please tell a staff member immediately so it can be reported.

By completing the induction and checklist, you help us maintain a safe, welcoming environment for everyone. Thank you for your commitment to our school community.
