Target Micro

Created by: Samantha (AI Engineer), Naomi (Specifications Management), Ryleigh (Editor & Drafting Specialist), & Yasmine (Political Environmentalist)

Amazon-Go Style Target.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to understand how technological progress can change the landscape for all.

1. The Liedtka Framework: Four Questions for Growth

  • What Is? (The Reality): Our Corporate Strategy currently prioritizes "Accelerating Technology" to remove friction. Currently, guests love our curated "Target Run," but urbanites find the 125,000 sq. ft. footprint a deterrent for a single item.
  • What If? (The Possibility): What if Target was a 3,000 sq. ft. autonomous "grab-and-go" hub located in apartment lobbies or transit centers?
  • What Wows? (The Sweet Spot): The "Wow" is the Zero-Interruption Shop. You walk in, grab a "Good & Gather" salad and a "Heyday" charger, and walk out. No scanning, no kiosks, no small talk.

What Works? (The Pilot): Using our Micro-Fulfillment technology to restock these cells via local "Hub" stores, keeping costs low and inventory fresh.

Organizational Structure

  • Target Micro uses a lean, tech-driven structure with minimal staff.
  • Most tasks like checkout and tracking purchases are handled by AI systems, which reduces the need for traditional roles like cashiers.
  • Employees instead act as flexible support staff, helping customers and maintaining the store when needed.

This structure allows the store to stay efficient while still keeping a human presence for problem-solving and support.

Walk Out Technology:

Opportunity: Acquiring the Convenience Segment

Target is the best supermarket out there, according to the younger segments. We know that some would prefer not to interact with anyone. Because of this, we have created a Target-Store Prototype where you can just grab your groceries and leave. Everything has been scanned through a comprehensive camera system and charged right to your wallet.

With special attention to who this personality could be, we have designed a seamless Target Micro with state-of-the-art Walk-out Technology.
Pain Points Identification
Persona Alignment

Alignment using Reddit r/Target: High frustration with "locked items" and understaffing. Justifies Autonomous/Unstaffed tech.

r/minimalism: High value placed on Time-to-Exit and small footprints. Justifies the 3,000 sq. ft. Micro format.

r/Seattle / r/NYC: High demand for Target brands within walking distance. Justifies the Urban Pod placement.

To make this store successful, we are targeting "Alex the Hyper-Commuter." Demographic Profile

  • Age: 26–38
  • Location: High-density urban centers (e.g., Chicago’s Wicker Park or NYC’s SoHo).
  • Occupation: Tech-adjacent professional / Gig-economy "Optimizer."
  • Income: $75k–$120k.

Psychographic & Behavioral Insights

  • The "Time-as-Currency" Mindset: Alex doesn't "shop"; they "acquire." They view a 5-minute checkout line as a loss of productivity.
  • Brand Affinity: They are loyal to Target’s Owned Brands (specifically Good & Gather for food and Open Story for travel) but want them with the speed of a vending machine.
  • Tech-First: They already use Target Circle 360 and have the app set to "location-always" for easy Drive-Up.

Pain Points & Goals

  • Pain Point: Entering a massive Target for two items (the "Target Trap") where you spend $100 and 40 minutes you didn't have.
  • Goal: To maintain a "premium-curated" lifestyle without the "suburban-chore" time commitment.

Target's Current Goals and Alignment

Alignment with Target’s Strategy

  • Focus on convenience, efficiency, and digital integration.
  • Target already uses tools like Drive Up, app-based shopping, and store-based fulfillment.
  • Creates an even faster option for customers who only need a few items.
  • Supports market expansion because smaller stores could fit into urban areas, college neighborhoods, or transit-heavy locations where a full-size Target would not make sense.
Overall, Target Micro supports innovation while keeping the customer experience simple and familiar.
