History in Action: 7th Grade Debate

Otselic Valley’s 7th grade Social Studies class recently brought history to life through a classroom debate centered on the question:

Should colonists declare their independence from Britain?

Students worked in pairs to research individual colonists and prepare one-to-two-minute arguments based on the views of historical figures from the time period. The patriot team represented figures such as Mercy Otis Warren, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and Crispus Attucks. The loyalist team represented Joseph Brant, Lord Dunmore, Jonathan Boucher, and Thomas Hutchinson.
