Introduction
The past quarter century has seen tremendous growth in the attention given to preparing students for their academic futures. Students have personal tutors, academic advisors and college counselors helping them best prepare for their next step in education. The services seem more abundant than ever, but so are the pressures and confusion.
Overlooked in this can be the critical question of where a student is in their understanding of themself and their life story.
Our Student Horizons program offers students the opportunity to more fully understand their innate strengths and challenges and understand how their life's story is unfolding. Through the process, they will develop:
- deepened self-awareness
- stronger relationships
- greater confidence
Our tool For Self Discovery
The program centers on the exploration of personal preferences, strengths and challenges through the world's most widely validated personality inventory - The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, more commonly known as the MBTI.
The short video below will introduce you to this tool, which is engaged in each year by over two million people.
- Context - establishing the scope, purpose and goals of the program
- Assessment - taking the actual online MBTI assessment
- Discovery - unpacking the results of the assessment to hone the results and consider the future practical suggestions of it
Context
Why are we doing this? Establishing a good answer to that question is our first step such that understanding and investment in the process can be most fully recognized. This step ensures that the student can proceed with clarity and confidence in the next part of the process.
SETTING: In person or virtual, depending on preference
TIMING: Approximately 60 minutes, with additional time answering questions as needed
Assessment
Our program uses the official Myers-Briggs MBTI Complete assessment, which consists of 93 questions and can be taken online. The resulting report will then become the basis for reflection and discernment in the next step.
SETTING: Taken individually online
TIMING: Typically 15-20 minutes to complete the question inventory. Depending on group size, between 7-10 days are allowed for students to complete their online MBTI assessment.
Discovery
This final step provides a thorough analysis of the results the MBTI assessment, including:
- Descriptions of each type
- Strengthening of clarity in type determination
- Exploration of personal strengths and challenges, as identified by the assessment
SETTING: In person encouraged, but available virtually by preference
TIMING: 90-120 minutes typically required to fully explain test results and discuss implications
Program Sequence
Our program engages students in the established three-step sequence of the MBTI process, with dedicated meeting time provided for each step. The program typically spans three weeks, which gives students adequate time to understand and engage in each step.
