Welcome to the June 2025 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.
Safe and secure
This month we completed the construction of the primary substation build at Graven Hill, Bicester so it can be handed over to the client in readiness for the internal fit out of power, lighting and alarm system.
The HV switchgear and transformers will be installed later in the year.
Once operational, the substation will service the future expansion of Graven Hill, including residential and commercial developments.
Powering the future
Works at our new access road to the DNO and IDNO substation compound are nearing completion with the Asphalt now laid. The construction of the road includes both Permeable and Non-Permeable Asphalt.
A final CCTV survey of the new drainage system has been completed (included the installation of the Interceptor and Attenuation Tanks) and connection to the localised water course.
On the buses…
June saw the handover of the new EV infrastructure at Cricklewood Bus depot in North London. Our works included the construction of the new DNO substation and client substation, concrete pillars for the two LV E-houses, EV charger bases, ducting network and Armco and bollard protection.
This is the first phase of electrification of Metroline Cricklewood bus depot which will see 60 new electric buses go into service. The second phase will be even bigger!
Networking
Works are progressing well at our 33kV solar and BESS link in Norwich which will see the first cables installed in early July along the A140. The cable joint bays are being constructed to ensure safe working area for the cable jointers. Given proximity to the carriageway, a temporary works design has been developed for the construction including a combination of 10”x2” and 8”x4” C24 timber for the walers, Type 1 Acro props and a 50mm concrete base to provide a working platform for the cable pullers and jointers.
The duct installation teams are now clear of the A140 and working under a road closure along Brick Kiln Lane. This month saw them navigate a RC culvert pipe (which required a temporary works design to install the ducts under the asset). Looking ahead we will be installing the ducting underneath the railway which has required liaison and collaboration with Network Rail to ensure working methods and BAPA agreements are all in place.
Lighting the way
There has been good progress this month at Metroline bus depot in Potters Bar with the construction of the first zone of charger plinths for the Phihong DC chargers (with lighting mounts) and the construction of a new footpath for the new pedestrian access to site. All works have been carried out safely with minimum disruption to the busy bus depot.
The path ahead
Following extensive works on the new HV network at Sheffield University, the final HV POC’s have been completed. The reconfiguration of the NPG network in the footway along Europa Link Sheffield, has enabled the energisation of the HV reinforcement works undertaken for and on behalf of the University.
