HUNAR MELA 2024 SALWAN JUNIOR SCHOOL, NARAINA

Purpose & Background

Salwan Education Trust in collaboration with Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development (ITRHD) continues to carry on the campaign of #Savetheartists. From the last two year’s resounding success in promoting the art of our rural India, to provide these artisans a means to promote their culture, handicrafts, and handlooms from the artisans from Azamgarh, Hunar Mela 2024 was organized on Saturday, 17 August 2024 in the school premises. This collaboration saw the multi-faceted craftsmanship and handicrafts from the corners of rural India. From weavers to handlooms, from the creative DIYs of National Blind Association of India to Kantha work of Santiniketan, West Bengal, and finally the famous exquisite art on fabrics colored the school in creative hues.

EVENT DETAILS AT A GLANCE

Why is this event being held?

Empowerment Through Craft: The NAB's Vision for Change

The National Association for the Blind (NAB) focuses on enhancing the lives of visually impaired individuals across India, with a special emphasis on empowering blind women. Their mission, "TO CHANGE THE LIFE OF BLIND WOMEN IN INDIA," was exemplified as they exhibited a stall showcasing handmade rakhis, coasters, pen stands, and other handicrafts, highlighting their remarkable skills and creativity.

Nature's Canvas: The Artistry of Santiniketan

The unique artistry of Santiniketan brought together the beauty of nature and creativity. Specializing in handcrafted jewelry, these artisans created stunning pieces using palm fiber, palm, date palm leaves, and natural seeds. Each piece told a "STORY OF TRADITION AND NATURE," reflecting the rich heritage and natural beauty of the region.

Timeless Elegance: Mubarakpur's Weaving Legacy

At our school exhibition, a stall was set up by the artisans of Mubarakpur, an ancient handloom weaving cluster with a rich history dating back to the 14th century. They brought an array of their exquisite articles, including luxurious satin weaves adorned with intricate Zari motifs. These finely crafted fabrics, once praised by the medieval traveler Ibn Batuta, highlighted the enduring legacy of Mubarakpur's exceptional craftsmanship. The stall offered a glimpse into the region's celebrated textile heritage, showcasing the artistry that has been passed down through generations.

Celebrating Artistry and Strength: Kantha Exhibition

At our school exhibition, we proudly showcased the mesmerizing Kantha art from Santiniketan. Our stalls were adorned with stunning fabrics transformed by the skilled hands of women artisans. Each piece highlighted the intricate beauty of Bengal’s heritage while telling a story of empowerment and creativity. The exhibition not only celebrated the exquisite artistry of Kantha but also honored the women who brought these traditions to life, providing them with valuable skills and economic independence. Visitors were invited to explore the rich cultural tapestry and support the incredible craftsmanship of these talented artisans.
