WEEK 6, TERM 4, 17 NOVEMBER 2023

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

At our November P and C Annual General Meeting all positions were open for re-election. Thank you to all our outgoing P and C Executive members for their voluntary work throughout 2023 and to our former P and C President Vivienne Xie for her service to the school community. Our new P and C President is Mrs Radhika Prasanna. Thank you to Radhika and all our new office holders for volunteering their time and effort to support the school. At our November meeting we discussed the need to raise additional funds for a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) over the new Multi-Courts. Please see the email sent to all parents and caregivers (dated 16 November) with the details of this project. Donations can be made to the school via our school website 'Make a Payment' section at: Parent Payment Portal

SPEECH DAY INVITE

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT

Major Works - Significant work has been done in the school this term to upgrade the COLA area. A total replacement of the Soft Fall surface is being installed and new garden beds that also act as seating have been included. The outdoor chess game will also be repainted for students to use. This project will improve the space for recreation, lunch and as a flexible learning space for classes. The Department of Education Assets team advises that the project should be completed by the end of Term 4.

Year 10 - Life and Resilience Week commences on Monday 20th November. Students are able to wear mufti but are reminded that clothing and footwear should be suitable for physical activity. Activities include the Collaboration Challenge Showcase, Beach Safety, Safety and Fitness, Car Maintenance and a range of wellbeing workshops. All students should swipe their attendance at the beginning of each day. Thank you to the Wellbeing Team for organising this week of valuable learning experiences for our students.

Year 8 - Year 8 students have been invited to attend a High Resolves Social Progress Workshop at UTS on the 7th and 8th December. Students will be engaged in an immersive simulation considering questions of social justice and active citizenship. The workshop focuses on building student confidence, motivation and skills in making a difference in their lives and in their communities. Further information has been emailed to parents through School Bytes. The workshop provides a further opportunity to challenge and engage our High Potential and Gifted Education students.

Attendance - Our school monitors attendance including whole day and partial absences. If your child is regularly attending late, important learning time is impacted. The graphic below from the Department of Education explains the consequence in terms of time lost. We encourage parents to discuss lateness with their child and support them in arriving at school on time. If a student is repeatedly late we do discuss this with them and plan for better punctuality. If you have concerns regarding the attendance pattern of your child please contact your child’s Year Adviser through the school’s email address for advice.

Year 11- This week we had the Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our year 11 students who will now take over occupation of the Year 12 Cottage. Mr Truong also organised a BBQ for the students to celebrate the event. Thank you for all your hard work Mr Truong.

Year 12 Assessment Week - Year 12 Assessments begin Week 9 December 4-8. The examination timetable was released to students this week via the student portal.

World Kindness Day - This Monday was world kindness day. The Year 10 Student Wellbeing Leaders under the leadership of Ms Hoogerwerf created a lovely mural in the Quad area to celebrate the day. It was a wonderful reminder to remember to spread some kindness across the HGHS community.

NIHON UNIVERSITY BUZAN GIRLS' SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Visit

Congratulations to all Year 10 students who participated in our great partnership with Nihon University Buzan Girls' Senior High School who visited our school on Tuesday 7 November.

Thank you in particular to Melodie, Helen and Alexandria for their organisation of the student games and to Yuna for her translations.

Thank you to Isabella for her piano playing, to our bands, Take Two and the Sax Quartet and to everyone who assisted, well done!

Thank you also to Mrs Lawson as our Japanese language teacher for inspiring our Japanese language students to work so hard to make sure the visit was a great success. We are all very proud of your efforts!

On the 7th of November, 62 students from Nihon University Buzan Girls' Senior High School visited Hornsby Girls, and Year 10 and Year 11.5 Japanese extension students had the honour of spending the day with them!

The day started with speeches from Dr Briggs, Nichidai Buzan students, and performances from the Sax Quartet, Take Two, and Isabella He.

We then delved into icebreakers, including an ultimate scissors-paper-rock competition, and students from both schools interacted, got to know each other better and started forming friendships. This was followed by a school tour, where students split into groups before taking the Nichidai Buzan students on a Hornsby adventure!

The Japanese students then engaged in a fun art activity led by Ms Pozzolungo, where they designed calico bags and tags, before receiving a copy of the 2021 Minerva Magazine. Year 10 students Methuli Dias and Regina Mo briefly explained what the magazine was about, and students from both schools showed off their dance skills through cultural dances and Zumba routines!

Nichidai Buzan students were served a variety of bread, salad and paella for lunch, and joined our students in the playground to spend time with each other.

We then had a period of trivia, where students had to translate certain questions and overcome the language barrier to win! This was followed by an intense water bottle-flipping showdown and a finish-the-lyrics competition between both schools. Sadly, the day had to come to an end, as we exchanged presents and bid our new friends goodbye.

Thank you to Melodie Hsiao, Helen Bui, Alexandria Masuda and the Year 10 Japanese class for organising the day of activities, and to Yuna Ko for her translations. Thank you to Dr Briggs and Ms Lawson for overseeing, planning and supervising us. Thank you to everyone who helped plan the day, and to everyone who participated!

Thank you Nichdai Buzan Girls for visiting us, we hope to see you again!

Year 9 Sport

Year 9 make selections for their sport in Term 4 - they can select from free, at school options such as netball, tennis and basketball or a fee paying option such as PCYC multisports or our new option, Tenpin bowling at Hornsby RSL.

For grade sport, a group of lucky year 9 students had the opportunity to bowl at Hornsby RSL's "The Attic". We have been working on our bowling skills and competitive spirits for the past few weeks, and the high scores have been getting higher and higher. Definitely a big hit with everyone! Thank you to the sport teachers who have organised this for us.

YEAR 9 CHARITY DAY

On Thursday the 12th of October (week 1 Thursday), Year 9 held their annual charity day! For Year 9 Charity Day, the committee chose to support "Fitted For Work", an Australian organisation which focuses on raising funds and collecting work clothing for women looking for job opportunities. Year 9 Charity Day was definitely a hit! We had a fabulous bake sale filled with a variety of sweet treats, a lolly guessing game (congratulations to Maggie in Year 7 who correctly guessed 51 lollies in the jar!!!) and a paper chain activity where students could decorate little paper figurines in work attire. It was a fun filled day and overall quite successful! All together the committee managed to raise $611.75 for Fitted For Work!

On behalf of the committee, we would like to thank our Year Advisor Ms Farnon for helping us organise the day.

YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY - National Champions- McCormick Flavour Forecast Challenge

Year 9 Elective Food Technology classes participate each year in the McCormick Flavour Forecast Challenge. This year a group from our school were judged to be the best in Australia and National champions! The winning group was Jessica Tung and Laundri Huang (Full Flavoured Fats), Aurora Ly and Abigail Tang (Everyday French) and Sanemi Mishra and Nanditha Kaimal (Beyond Heat). The group's success was a result of the collaborative approach, support and feedback provided to them by the class. This year's challenge was quite tricky. Students were required to create three dishes based on three different themes.

The first theme was Full Flavoured Fats.

Students had to develop three sweet or savoury butters.

One butter must be cultured, One butter must be a ‘better for you’ butter and One butter must be used in a butter board format as a breakfast dish.

Students must also produce two types of ‘homemade carriers’ i.e. crispbreads, crackers and/or breads to be served with any of the butters.

At least one of the ‘homemade carriers’ must include an ancient grain.

The second theme was Everyday French. Students had to choose one French cooking technique then develop a sweet or savoury dish that blends this technique with a cuisine of another culture. Must include at least two vegetables and/or fruits and one protein source (animal or plant).

The third theme was Beyond Heat. Using a Viet Cajun spice blend students had to create an original lacto ovo vegetarian pizza or pasta dish that heroes the spice blend. Students must make their own pizza base or pasta, and at least two of the techniques of charring, smoking, toasting, liquefy/blend or pickling must be used with at least two vegetables.

YEAR 8, 9 & 10 LANGUAGES COOKING INCURSION - french, german and japanese

Thursday of week 5, Piatto Perfetto came to school to prepare some delicious French, German and Japanese dishes with our language students. Students got to flip crêpes mid air, stir noodles and eat some Spätzle. Here are a few words from our language students.

The Cooking and Culture incursion was a valuable learning experience. The Spaetzle dish was fun to make and tasted delicious. The chefs were very patient with us as our group worked their arm muscles hard to mix the dough, while the other group made the bacon and cream sauce (German students).

The Japanese Cooking Incursion was so fun and energetic with an oishi (delicious) noodle dish being a testament of our hardwork and enjoyment. Arigatou Gozaimasu (thank you) Lawson Sensei for organising this and Chef Luka and his team for providing us with such a pleasant and memorable experience. Doumo Arigatou! (Japanese students)

The cooking incursion was well organised and very inclusive with the active cooking process. It was a super fun, interactive way to gain an understanding about French foods and learn some new French words. The crepes were absolutely delicious with sugar, whipped cream and raspberry topping. Flipping the crepes was really fun!(French students)"

It was certainly a very interesting and unique experience, and we enjoyed discovering the aspects of Japanese cuisine while taking turns with the frying pan in the hall. It was exciting to see how the dish would turn out. In the end, we were very satisfied with our delicious efforts, earning a bowl full of tasty udon noodles!

Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO) 2023

Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO) is a highly challenging maths competition designed to identify and stretch talented students. The AIMO paper is pitched at a Year 10 level but may also be attempted by motivated and talented students in years 7 to 9 who have scored very highly in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

AIMO results are used to identify students for selection in the Australian Maths Trust’s invitational high-performance programs.

The AIMO contains unique problems designed to challenge and assess students’ problem-solving skills.

The questions range in difficulty. It is expected that only a small number of students will be able to complete the whole paper in the 4 hour time allocation.

Well done to Zinat Abdullah of Year 7 and Lena Pham of Year 10 for accepting the invitation to compete in AIMO this year and especially to Lena for achieving a High Distinction.

Congratulations Lena!

Congratulations to all students who participated in the extra-curricula Maths programs this year and I look forward to your continued involvement next year.
